Northrop Grumman Mission Systems has an opening for a Senior Principal Systems Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals at our Linthicum/ Baltimore, MD campus.  Security Clearance to be obtained prior to starting in the role.

This position requires expertise and interest in defining and achieving advanced Electro-Optical and Infrared (EOIR) collection systems. The selected engineer will work directly with internal and external customers to define and trade architectures, derive requirements, trade alternatives, identify and perform analyses, and work across technical disciplines within the larger EOIR environment. The successful candidate will have familiarity with both active and passive systems to perform detection, tracking, targeting, and similar remote sensing activities. To be most successful, this expertise should span the development lifecycle, from concept development to demonstration systems and through to deliverable systems and operation. Mode definition/execution, performance/range computations, and small team leadership are of particular interest for this role.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate directly with program leadership, primarily for technical aspects but also for programmatic
  • Translate customer concepts into achievable physical and digital systems
  • Define system trades, then recommend and implement strategies to downselect approaches for EO/IR sensors based on mission understanding
  • Support a range of technical implementations for a range of fast-paced programs
  • Understand domain-specific options, limitations, and expectations for mission success

Basic Qualifications:

  • A degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field and:
    • 9+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree
    • 7+ years of experience with a Master’s Degree
    • 4+ years of experience with a PhD
  • 5+ years of experience in implementation for advanced EOIR systems, focused on successfully delivering developmental physical systems to customer(s)
  • 4+ years of experience in EOIR applications, including model development/application in Matlab, Python, and/or C/C++
  • 4+ years of experience in collection or remote sensing applications, including radiometry, image processing, algorithms, and/or detectors
  • 3+ years of experience in developing and implementing novel systems
  • Excellent communication skills for both written and in-person content
  • Experience engaging directly with technical and programmatic representatives
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Willingness and ability to work onsite and more than 80% within a closed area at the Baltimore campus
  • Ability to assimilate new concepts quickly and independently
  • Active Secret Clearance as well as SAP accesses prior to starting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and interest in supporting proposals
  • Understanding of the trades and impacts associated with architectures and designs
  • Experience with tactical systems and applications
  • Interest in and track record of providing successful mentorship
  • Ability to work across multiple geographically separated campuses
  • Current Top Secret, SCI, and/or SAP accesses

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Salary Range: $123,800 USD - $185,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
