Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Systems Engineering Integration and Test (SEIT) Engineering Manager with experience, knowledge and interest in leading Test Engineers that specialize in embedded real-time control Systems. This position will be located in Sykesville, MD in our Engineering department within the Power/Control Systems organization.

The qualified candidate will become part of Northrop Grumman’s high performing, Systems Engineering team. This is a dual-role manager position involving both overall management of a SEIT functional group of 10-15 integration and test systems engineers, as well as productive work across several programs. The candidate will actively be involved in developing and supporting military power conversion, distribution, and networked machinery control systems including exposure to all phases of the program life cycle from concept development through integration, test and support. At the Power/Control Systems organization, we offer a dynamic work environment providing the highest level of engineering, product design and system support for our nation’s aircraft carriers and submarines, as well as other naval and ground based system platforms.

The candidate will be expected to perform productive (direct charge) work on programs as well as functional responsibilities as a frontline manager for an engineering group. It is anticipated that given the size of the functional team indicated above, the split between program and functional duties will be approximately 80/20 on average. The direct program work may include technical and programmatic tasks, IPT leadership, proposal generation and estimating, Cost Account Management (CAM), or any other appropriate billable technical and/or leadership function. Additional technical responsibilities will be performing technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability analyses for total systems.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Leading/managing tasks and projects on a team developing medium to large power conversion equipment or embedded real time control systems. Items to be addressed consist of electrical, software, controls, and packaging design activities.
  • Engineering personnel management activities including staffing programs, recruiting and interviews, managing employee’s time and headcount, mentoring, yearly goal setting, review and evaluation of employee performance, compensation planning and notification, employee skill development and career growth,
  • Engineering functional responsibilities including monitoring of compliance with department processes and company values, supporting department initiatives, providing team leadership and engagement, and approving time charging.
  • Performing trade studies, generating systems engineering documents, reports and operational documentation.
  • Developing requirements, system and sub-system specifications, interface control documentation, concept of operations, test plans and test procedures.
  • Generating and presenting material to support internal and external customer meetings and proposals.
  • Troubleshooting electronic equipment and providing in-service field support.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Software or Systems Engineering from an accredited university. 9 years of experience and a Bachelors in Science; 7 years of experience with a Masters degree ; 3 Years of experience with a PhD.
  • Experience in one or more of the following system engineering knowledge areas: technical planning, requirements derivation, functional analysis, timeline analysis, trade studies, cost and risk analysis, interface definition, system design, system integration, verification and validation, supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems.
  • Experience in leading a technical team through either a program or functional management role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work within diverse teams.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance. No dual citizenship allowed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a frontline manager in a dual role environment
  • Earned value management experience
  • Experience with nuclear power generation, power conversion, or software enabled real time control systems.
  • Experience in system architecture development and system design
  • Familiarity with industrial process control and control theory
  • Experience with the United States Navy or other military services
  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting hardware and/or software
  • Active DoD Secret clearance


Salary Range: $141,100 USD - $211,700 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
