Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for an Engineer Test to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Clearfield, Utah.

You will be a part of an Inspection Development Group responsible for:

  • Development of advanced NDT inspection technologies and sensors including laser ultrasound, phased array ultrasound, air coupled ultrasonic, THz and GHz, thermography, shearography, digital x-ray and computer aided data analysis

  • Design, fabrication, installation and testing of automated inspection systems for internal use

  • Integration of advanced NDT inspection technologies into automated systems and their qualification for the production

  • NDT Support of production programs during their whole life cycle

Responsibilities:

  • Take responsibility for the overall inspection processes and oversee, initiate, & implement actions to optimize the processes to meet safety, quality, & production goals

  • Become the local expert on Automated Ultrasonic Inspection Systems (AUIS) and intimately familiar with the mechanical, electrical, & software components of the machines including the ultrasonic inspection techniques

  • Lead troubleshooting of existing AUIS systems; support the modifications and upgrades of existing AUIS systems; assist Maintenance Department as required

  • Maintain configuration control on system hardware & software

  • Support the startup of new system including but not limited to:

    • Coordination with Tooling Department to acquire part support and other production support tooling as needed

    • Qualification of the system as per program requirements

    • Motion programming

    • Initial and periodic system performance verification testing

  • Conduct root cause/corrective action investigations using multiple tools; 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagram, 5D, etc., and implement corrective action plans. 

  • Create and/or maintain required process and system documentation

  • Work with  NDI Operations, Document Control & Engineering to ensure that accurate work instructions and requirements are available on the production floor

Our team works in a fast-paced work environment with high expectations and significantly diverse assignments. We are comfortable both in a lab environment and on the production floor, and we collaborate closely with NDT technicians, test engineers and quality control engineers, program and operation managers, and customers. We're a small group and a close-knit team. Our work is highly dynamic and our activities will vary from project to project. We are NDT development team integrated within a top tier defense contractor. We are looking for innovators!

Travel is estimated to be less than 10% to support other sites (Iuka, MS, and Dayton, OH) during system and process qualification as required. We work a 9/80 schedule, which gives you every other Friday to pursue passions outside of the office.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and 2+ years of experience supporting automated electro-mechanical systems (machining centers, inspection systems, robotic systems)

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DoD Secret clearance within 5 ½ years of last investigation

  • Aptitude for working with electro-mechanical systems including robotic systems (Kuka)

  • Excellent troubleshooting skills

  • Proficient in computers and networking

  • Proficient in Catia, ePIC, Solumina or similar programs

  • Proficient in Word, Excel, MS Project and PowerPoint.

  • Experience with  automated inspection systems and composite NDI techniques

  • Ability & desire to learn new skills outside of normal work duties, such as software diagnostics, electro-mechanical systems, and ultrasonics

  • Experience in composites aerospace industry

  • Experience with running & troubleshooting LabVIEW based systems

Salary Range: $64,600 USD - $97,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
