Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Propulsion Division is currently looking for a Staff Systems Engineer to work in our Promontory or Bacchus (Magna), UT location.

Description:

Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems is currently seeking a Staff Systems Engineer within the Systems and Project Engineering Homeroom (community of practice). This position supports Systems, Project, and Chief Engineers across the program portfolio at the Bacchus (Magna) & Promontory, UT locations within the Propulsion Systems Business Unit; home location may be located at either campus with the expectation of at least one in-person day per week at each.

Responsibilities: 


We are seeking an experienced professional with a passion for developing organizational standards, processes, tools, and training that enable our program engineering leaders to effectively execute on their commitments and coordinate across disciplines. This person will seek to deeply understand our business and how work gets done, think creatively to identify solutions and drive continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate is someone who has had prior experience in a program technical leadership role (i.e Chief Engineer) and is now interested in applying their experience towards improving our organizational processes and systems for the Systems, Project, and Chief Engineering discipline. The candidate will need to build strong relationships with Chief Engineers across programs to understand their challenges and work with them to implement improvements, as well as build strong relationships with functional leaders to identify integrated and collaborative solutions. The candidate will also represent our business unit as a subject matter expert internally and externally.

Prior experience in all following areas is not required and does not exclude a candidate for consideration, but a willingness to engage in self-directed learning is essential to success.

Specific areas of ownership for standards, processes, tools, and training may include:

  • Planning and scheduling of engineering activities, agile methodology

  • System requirements and verification activities, integration and interface management

  • Trade studies and system optimization

  • Technical milestone reviews, technology and manufacturing maturity management

  • Engineering design documentation, bill of materials, and configuration management

  • Risk and opportunity management

  • System safety,  reliability, non-conformance and problem/failure investigation

  • Material obsolescence

  • Escalation processes and help chains

  • Digital transformation strategic planning

  • Knowledge management

  • Teams and team leadership


Job Duties: 

  • Subject matter expert for discipline standards, processes, tools, and training supporting Systems, Project, and Chief Engineers

  • Lead for the Systems and Project Engineering Homeroom (community of practice)

  • Align with Chief Engineers’ needs and business unit needs

  • Drive Systems and Project engineers’ proficient use of processes and tools

  • Peer review products and deliverables

  • Lead high-priority investigations or improvement teams across the business as needs emerge

  • Establish and maintain metrics for evaluating engineering performance

  • Facilitate effective knowledge management through establishment of processes and tools, execution of after-action reviews

  • Influence development of Digital Transformation strategy, research and benchmark tools and processes, facilitate implementation of Digital Transformation solution roadmaps, support transition to a model-based culture

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Typical candidates may be expected to have a minimum 14 Years’ relevant experience with BS; 12 Years with Masters; 9 Years with PhD

  • Prior experience in a program technical leadership role (i.e Chief Engineer)

  • Strong communication skills, capable of building strong relationships with senior engineering leaders

  • Strong desire to learn and drive continuous improvement, seeking and evaluating potential solutions internal and external to the organization

  • Independently establish plans and determine organizational priorities

  • Highly organized and capable of creating effective knowledge management systems

  • Knowledge of learning and development principles

  • Interest in mentoring / coaching junior technical leads

  • Ability to lead large-scale organizational change

  • Knowledge of aerospace standards and processes desired

  • Experience in solid rocket motor design, development, qualification, production and sustainment desired

  • Experience desired with some of the following tools: planning and scheduling (MS Project, Primavera, Jira), knowledge management (SharePoint, Confluence), CAD tools (NX, SOLIDWORKS, CATIA), analytical modeling tools (Abaqus, Fluent), and systems engineering tools (Cameo, DOORS, Rhapsody, Phoenix ModelCenter).

Education/Certifications: 

  • Engineering Degree required, advanced degree preferred, minimum 14 Years’ relevant experience with BS; 12 Years with Masters; 9 Years with PhD

  • Systems Engineering Certification desired but not required

  • PMP Certification desired but not required

This position reports to Magna, UT, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Corinne, UT, UT, USA.


Salary Range: $139,000 USD - $208,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
