Join the Tactical Space Systems Division Mission Systems Engineering organization in a strategic role as a senior Mission Systems Architect Consultant to support critical national security programs at our Dulles, VA campus, Colorado Springs, CO campus or our Gilbert, AZ campus.  These roles are responsible for leading mission concept development, customer interfacing and strategic roadmap creation and implementation.

As a Mission Systems Architect Consultant within the Tactical Space Systems Division, you will make key decisions that define the mission and configuration for space programs of critical importance to the nation.  You will perform trade studies that impact the scope and capability of our nations space assets. In this role, you will help transform the landscape of space engineering in our restricted and unrestricted customer areas.

Our main business locations include, but are not limited to Dulles, VA, Gilbert, AZ and Colorado Springs, CO.  There is flexibility on work locations near other NG hubs.

Our Mission Architects have several key roles

  • Lead, plan, and manage mission utilization of complex space systems and capabilities. 
  • Performs system-of-system trades, modeling, simulation, and analysis to assess space mission architecture alternatives for delivering a customer mission effect, data or capability as it fits within a broader campaign.
  • Performs analysis-of-alternatives and synthesizes mission elements to lead to a cohesive space mission solution. Space mission architecture trades may include orbits, launch vehicles, space vehicles, payloads, ground segment, mission planning, Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), Design Reference Missions (DRM), system security and external interfaces.
  • Perform system analysis, design optimization, system performance assessments, and operations analysis work in support of integrated mission analysis for current and potential customers. 
  • Track Measures of Performance, Measures of Effectiveness and define other metrics to ensure capabilities meet customer needs and objectives.  
  • Leads space mission system element design, capability assessment, mission threads, interfaces, verification/validation planning, and mission integration functions during system development.
  • Leads demonstration and delivery of mission effects during on-orbit operations and provides long term sustainment and mission augmentation support over the life of the mission.
  • Understand and communicate operational mission requirements to engineering teams.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Experience in Space Radar or ISR mission architectures, planning, command and control, and operations
  • Experience communicating operational mission requirements and interfaces to space, payload and/or ground system engineering teams
  • Must have U.S. Citizenship with a current or active Top Secret level clearance and the ability to obtain a SCI clearance.
  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related technical field and a minimum of 20 years of applicable experience, or a Master's Degree and 18 years of applicable experience

Preferred Experience:

  • U.S. Citizenship with a current or active Top Secret SCI level clearance
  • CONOPS development for Space Missions involving end-to-end mission data threads
  • Prior experience conducting system analysis, design optimization, and or system performance assessments
  • Knowledge of various space radar payloads, data acquisition & processing, information analyses techniques and software tools
  • Experience with existing space radar on-orbit capabilities
  • Knowledge of various ISR payloads, data acquisition & processing, information analyses techniques and software tools
  • Experience with existing ISR on-orbit capabilities

This position reports to Dulles, VA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Gilbert, AZ, AZ, USA.


Salary Range: $198,500 USD - $297,700 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
