Northrop Grumman Space Systems Sector, Tactical Space Division in Dulles, VA, seeks a qualified and experienced Staff Systems Engineer. This candidate will serve as deputy to the program Chief Engineer for a space-to-ground communications network.

The candidate must be mission execution and end-user focused with extensive experience in practical systems engineering techniques and will immediately apply them to multiple US Government stakeholders. The candidate will provide both technical and programmatic leadership for networked communications systems that feature high-reliability communications support to multiple national security missions. Experience with both operations and sustainment of ground-based systems and space-based national security payloads and interfaces is strongly preferred.

The candidate must have experience with the following: architecture development, systems analysis, requirements and interface management, and Engineering Review Board representation over total systems lifecycle. Direct experience must include client collaboration with CONOPS, capability development, system design, design verification, system-of-systems integration, and system sustainment. On-orbit support is preferred. The candidate must have exceptional problem solving abilities, troubleshooting expertise, and be able to drive challenging technical issues to resolution to meet customer and mission-critical timelines. Leadership skills include the ability to help guide the program through a culture transition that will be based on systems engineering rigor.

This position requires ability to define/review electromechanical and RF & Digital communication designs and ensure that requirements are met for cost, schedule, and technical performance. This position will also require IPT leadership and coordination with multi-discipline functional organizations as well as internal and external stakeholders. The candidate must excel at preparation and presentation of mixed technical and project management topics to senior leadership and senior technical advisors. Superior written and verbal communication is mandatory. Broad systems development experience and understanding of the DoD, Intelligence Community, and their missions is desirable. Prior experience with Cost Account Management and EVMS oversight for multi-phased development projects is preferred.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or related technical field and 14+ years of systems engineering experience OR a Master’s degree in an engineering discipline or related technical field and 12+ years of systems engineering experience.

  • Technical leadership experience including total lifecycle, integrated product-team, and Systems Engineering Integration and Test (SEIT) leadership.

  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering for requirements and architecture management (DOORS and Cameo Systems Modeler preferred).

  • Experience developing planning, training, and technical briefings for wide ranging audiences including technician, engineer, sub-contractor, client, executive leadership.

  • Security Clearance: Active Top Secret / SCI with polygraph.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Broad systems development experience to include first-article concept development and operational deployment of new systems.

  • Robust understanding of both the operations and sustainment of ground-based government communications systems and their interactions with national security space payloads and missions.

  • Experience in the Space Domain / Space Vehicles, subsystems and components.

  • Prior experience in leadership as the prime contractor directing and coordinating execution of multiple sub-contractors toward an integrated solution.

  • Cross-domain technical experience including RF communications , space-to-ground communications , network engineering, and electrical/mechanical systems.

  • Experience designing and executing cross-functional trade studies using requirements-based criteria assessments.


Salary Range: $178,700 USD - $268,100 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
