Northrop Grumman Digital Thread organization, within the Office of the CIO has an opening for a Principal Systems Architect Engineer/Senior Principal Systems Architect Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This Position is hybrid on-site in Fairfax/Dulles, VA or Chandler, AZ with ability to be remote/Work from Home part of the time.

As an Architect the candidate will develop system architectures and define key capabilities and requirements. The individual will define, develop, implement, and transition new technology solutions to manufacturing to increase efficiency, reduce cost, and improve quality.  The role requires incorporation of requirements into development plans and evaluation of performance of processes and tools to verify their efficiency.  In this role, you will provide guidance regarding design concepts, TRL/MRL maturity, and specification requirements to best utilize resources and manufacturing techniques, and ensure processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations. This role involves interfacing with internal and external customers, program offices, engineering disciplines, and executive management.  In addition, the role will require the ability to handle multiple projects concurrently in a dynamic/fast-paced work environment.  Project Management skills will be utilized to properly scope and execute assigned work and manage project efforts.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Must have at minimum, a Bachelor's Degree with 9 years of relevant experience OR a Master's Degree with 7 years of relevant experience OR an Associate's Degree with 11 years of relevant experience OR a High School Diploma/GED with 13 years of relevant experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience Defining system architectures.
  • Previous experience with Architecture, CONOPS, and use case development using model-based systems engineering methodologies.
  • Ability to perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with Cameo Magic Draw or another MBSE tool 
  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills, decisiveness, and ability to make sound technical judgments with limited information.
  • Well-versed, skilled, and disciplined in system engineering processes; applied knowledge of systems engineering design.
  • Experience in the development, integration, and deployment of network architecture and digital infrastructure. 
  • Experience working with IPTs, other stakeholders, and various customers.
  • Prior experience operating in a dynamic environment of increasing production schedules and high delivery rates.
  • Experience in hardware/software integration of manufacturing systems
  • Experience with production assembly/fabrication including Digital Transformation, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality, Systems Integration, IIoT, RFID, and/or production manufacturing operations.
  • Experience working with Edge Devices
  • Digital Manufacturing experience
  • Architecture, Design & Integration experience for engineering systems and software
  • Technical Writing capability
  • Project / Program Management skills
  • Business Process mapping 

This position reports to Dulles, VA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Chandler, AZ, AZ, USA.


Salary Range: $112,000 USD - $194,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
