Northrop Grumman Space Systems Sector, Tactical Space Division in Dulles, VA and Colorado Springs, CO, seeks a qualified and experienced Lead Systems Engineer for a space-to-ground communications network program. This Systems Engineering role is responsible for leading the Systems Engineering technical team, which includes the following duties: conducting systems analysis and trades, coordinating Systems engineering activities, managing the engineering baseline, interfaces, and requirements/V&V, subcontractor technical oversight, CAM/EVMS duties, preparing/presenting SE material at all major reviews and PMRs and interfacing with the customer and SETAs on all space segment technical issues.

The responsibilities include both individual-contributor and leadership roles, within a multi-disciplined engineering team. Successful candidate will also be called upon to support other activities, including architecture studies, mission support, and traditional Systems Engineering functions. In this lead role, the Lead Systems Engineer is expected to be self-directed using previous experience to lead design, analysis and execution efforts. Candidates must be able to recognize and mitigate technical issues and risks while operating within budget and on schedule.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Lead/Provide major support to the entire program technical team.

  • Lead and optimize designs, processing, and mission success.

  • Troubleshoot and develop solutions to complex problems that the program may encounter.

  • Develop, author and/or provide input to major program data products and other deliverables.

  • Technical management of program elements

  • Planning and conduct of technical reviews and technical baseline

  • Writing status and technical performance reviews and reports

  • Mentor, coach, train, guide, direct and advise junior staff

  • The candidate will work with cross-discipline team members and must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse community of engineers and managers to achieve the goals of the program team.

The candidate must have exceptional problem solving abilities, troubleshooting expertise, and be able to drive challenging technical issues to resolution to meet customer and mission-critical timelines. Leadership skills include the ability to help guide the systems engineering team through a culture transition that will be based on systems engineering rigor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related area and 14+ years of experience, Master’s Degree and 12+ years of experience, PhD Degree and 9+ years of experience

  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering for requirements and architecture management (DOORS and Cameo Systems Modeler preferred)

  • Experience developing planning, training, and technical briefings for wide ranging audiences including technician, engineer, sub-contractor, client, executive leadership

  • Must be a US citizen with an active Top Secret / SCI

  • Experience working on programs that have implemented Agile methodologies such as Kanban or Scrum

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the Space Domain and familiarity with space vehicle subsystems and components.

  • Understanding of both the operations and sustainment of ground-based government communications systems and their interactions with national security space payloads and missions.

  • Technical experience in any of the following: RF communications , space-to-ground communications , network engineering, and electrical/mechanical systems.

  • Prior experience with Cost Account Management and EVMS oversight for multi-phased development projects.

  • Certified as an INCOSE CSEP or ESEP.


Salary Range: $156,000 USD - $234,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
