Sr. Staff Engineer: Deputy Lead of Guidance, Navigation, and Control – Space / Satellite Systems (Dulles, VA / Gilbert, AZ/ Hybrid)

We have an opening for a Deputy Lead GNC Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in the Tactical Space organization. This position will be located in Dulles, VA or can also be located in Gilbert, AZ. This position can be completed via a hybrid schedule, but you should expect to be in the office regularly.

We are looking for a motivated GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) engineer to join a growing team of GNC engineers that are designing, building, and testing GNC subsystems for spacecraft that are providing rapid new capabilities to DoD, NASA, and commercial customers.  This role is for a deputy lead within a multi-platform GNC product team.  As a deputy lead in this organization you will be responsible for managing and tracking subsystem execution while also providing technical guidance and leadership to the team. 

Roles and responsibilities for this position include:

• Track subsystem costs and schedule performance across multiple programs and multiple product lines
• Interface with GNC functional organization and the program management teams to report product team performance on a regular basis
• Identify and advocate for approaches to improve efficiencies within the product team
• Support new business activities including proposal writing and development of detailed cost and schedule estimates
• Oversee engineers over a wide spectrum of tasks that shall include GNC subsystem design & analysis, onboard algorithm development and testing, component procurement, testing & integration, and mission operations
• Provide GNC technical support as needed which may include the following:

•  Design, analyze, and tune spacecraft attitude and position control loops using time and frequency domain techniques
• Design, analyze, and tune sequential filters (e.g. Kalman filters) for attitude determination and relative navigation
• Design, develop, test and verify flight algorithms for the GNC subsystem and support flight software qualification testing
• Analyze and test the spacecraft GNC subsystem performance using simulations and other analytic tools
• Perform analysis to support early design phase concept development including actuator sizing and placement, sensor selection and placement, attitude and positon guidance, rendezvous, proximity operations and docking analyses, and predicted performance assessments
• Develop simulation models for sensors (e.g. star tracker, rate gyro, accelerometer, GPS, magnetometer, sun sensors), actuators (e.g. reaction wheel, torque bar, thruster, CMG), system dynamics (e.g. rigid body, multi-body, orbit mechanics, flexible models, propellant slosh), and the space environment (e.g. atmospheric, solar radiation pressure, third-body gravity, geopotential)

Basic Qualifications:

• BS Degree in Engineering, Physics, or Math with at least 14 years of professional experience ( 12 years with Masters, or 9 years with Ph.D) Experience can be considered in lieu of degree
• Experience in spacecraft GNC subsystem design, analysis, and testing
• Experience tracking and analysis program performance including Earned Value Management
• US Citizenship with ability to obtain Top Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications

• MS or PhD degree in engineering, physics, or math
• Overall GPA of 3.25
• Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and C/C++
• Experience implementing GNC algorithms on embedded systems
• Prior work experience in related field
• Proficiency in Microsoft office suite, version control tools such as SVN or Git
• Experience with Model Based Systems engineering, digital transformation tools such as the Atlassian suite.
• Previous/current membership or leadership roles in professional groups, clubs, or extracurricular activities is desired
• Excellent analytical and problem solving abilities
• Experience managing a large team of engineers

This position reports to Dulles, VA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Gilbert, AZ, AZ, USA.

Salary Range: $154,300 USD - $231,500 USD

Salary Range 2: $178,700 USD - $268,100 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
