Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is looking for an experienced aerodynamics engineer to join our team in designing and analyzing next-generation air vehicles. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in aerodynamics and a passion for developing innovative solutions to improve flight performance.

This candidate will conduct preliminary design and analysis of advanced manned and unmanned air vehicles demonstrating technical expertise and knowledge of other related disciplines. Tasks include aerodynamic analysis, aerodynamic database generation, and wind tunnel test support for candidate aircraft and missile designs as well as design synthesis and optimization of vehicles to mission requirements. This candidate will conduct aerodynamic analysis and design trade studies to define and evaluate advanced concepts, predict aerodynamic behavior, identify technology requirements, and provide design guidance to the other team disciplines.  They will develop technical solutions to various problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. The candidate will be required to interact and brief external customers, as well as serve as a technical expert. Candidate will support vehicle analysis for vehicle programs from government organizations such as Air Force, Navy, NASA, DARPA and others.  Experience with MATLAB/Python as well as a strong interest in empirical and computational aerodynamic analysis methods is desirable.

This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on the qualifications listed below. This requisition may be filled at either a level 4 or a level 5.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform project planning to determine program requirements and develop plans for program execution
  • A current active in-scope DoD Secret security clearance or higher, with the ability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP).
  • Interact with internal and external customers, assisting in defining system requirements, defining study areas, and providing status on current programs and technology
  • Develop and present materials for internal and external program related briefings
  • Support new business generation and prepare proposal material
  • Strong verbal and communication skills to interact with key cross-discipline stakeholders to achieve program objectives in a timely manner
  • Technical and ICD writing
  • Task planning, conducting technical peer reviews, and mentoring junior engineers
  • Lead and direct teams of analysts on programs
  • Apply and contribute to the development of advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Work on unusually complex technical problems and provide solutions which are highly innovative
  • Work under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives.
  • Develop advanced technological ideas and guide development into a final product.
  • Serve as organization spokesperson on advanced projects and/or programs. Act as advisor to management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications.

Basic Qualifications for a Sr. Principal Engineer level:

  • Basic qualifications for a Sr. Principal Engineer Systems include a Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) with 9 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in STEM with 7 years of related engineering experience; OR a PhD in STEM with 4 years of related engineering experience.
  • A current active in-scope DoD Secret security clearance or higher, with the ability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP).
  • B.S in Aeronautical Engineering or related field
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, C++, or similar
  • Organization and leadership skills

Basic Qualifications for a Staff Engineer level:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university and 14 years of engineering experience OR Master’s Degree and 12 years of engineering experience OR a PhD. Degree and 9 years of experience.
  • A current active in-scope DoD Secret security clearance or higher, with the ability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP).
  • B.S in Aeronautical Engineering or related field
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, C++, or similar
  • Organization and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with aerodynamic stores integration
  • Experience with store integration CFD, wind tunnel, ground, and flight tests
  • Experience with store 6DOF separation trajectory simulation
  • Participation in aircraft/stores certification processes
  • Experience in technical leadership and guidance in aerodynamic discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to lead an engineering or cross-functional team

Salary Range: $129,700 USD - $194,500 USD
Salary Range 2: $161,000 USD - $241,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
