Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems is seeking an Assistant Department Manager 3 - Semiconductor Products to assist the Department Manager of the Semiconductor Products Department. This role will be based in Manhattan Beach, California.

The Semiconductor Products Department is responsible for the development, maturation, and insertion of III-V semiconductor device technologies, including heterogeneous integration and chip-scale packaging. The department offers broad exposure to other areas and disciplines across Northrop Grumman Space Systems and plays a key role in enabling advanced electronics capabilities for our payloads.

Primary responsibilities for the Assistant Department Manager role are:

  • Manage a large and diverse portfolio of microelectronics technology maturation activities:

    • Provide technical and budget oversight with long-range planning and stakeholder interactions

    • Seek external funding to support maturation activities

    • Enable technology transitions to core programs

  • Support organizational growth and operational effectiveness:

    • Target and implement operational improvements within organization

    • Support operations scaling for growth with capital and infrastructure assessments

    • Execute on tasks and support operations coordination with related functional areas

  • Provide functional support and personnel management:

    • Ensure projects are adequately staffed and hiring goals are met

    • Develop long-range staffing and critical skill development plans

Additional responsibilities will include technical project management, proposal support, and mentoring.

The desired candidate will exhibit strong Leadership Characteristics, including effective communication and presentations to engineering teams and senior leadership, and be able to build and maintain effective people relations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a STEM field from an accredited institution

  • 7+ years of experience in semiconductor device development, maturation, and insertion

  • 5+ years of proven technical, program or functional leadership experience

  • Ability to manage engineers in a process driven environment

  • Experience collaborating with employees within a department and across functional areas

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an SCI clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in EE, Materials, Chemistry, or Physics from an accredited institution

  • Recognition within the broader organization as a subject matter expert in Microelectronics

  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven leadership abilities

  • Demonstrations of excellent communications skills which include the ability to verbally articulate and to make effective presentations, and to prepare clear and concise written reports

  • Experienced in product development, proposal support, managing yearly budgets of $5M+

  • Experience as a functional manager

  • Ability to manage and balance competing interests and priorities

  • Active SCI clearance


Salary Range: $176,100 USD - $264,100 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
