Northrop Grumman – Consulting Engineer - Computational Electromagnetics

Selected thought-leader will define, author, and present NGC’s Computational Electromagnetic (CEM) strategy to develop unparalleled analytical tools, processes and workforce with vision of ensuring NGC is the recognized industry leader when it comes to CEM technologies, capabilities and subject matter experts. 

Candidate should possess basic and advanced knowledge of Low Observables / Radar Cross Section (aka Stealth) engineering.  Candidate should also have professional recognition /credibility within DoD LO CEM community to facilitate engagements and/or partnerships leading to future business capture opportunities.

Leveraging disruptive technologies (e.g. High Performance Computing, Advanced Mathematical Algorithms, Optimization algorithms, RF materials, etc.), the candidate will lead development of innovative methods and tools to promote NGC’s competitive standing within the DOD’s LO enterprise.  This candidate will also have the ability to participate on independent review teams, uncover and resolve complex challenges, and present results to all levels of leadership.

Candidate must have multi-disciplinary knowledge to effectively serve as technical lead, consultant, or participant to various legacy and advanced LO programs, and advise multiple levels of management on technical research, applications, and long-range business planning. 

Job Description

  • Develop advanced algorithms to improve capability (job size and run time) in computational electromagnetics 2D and 3D codes
  • Develop advanced optimization methods and integrate with 2D and 3D CEM codes
  • Develop software architecture for NGAS analysis tools
  • Establish NGAS vision and develop roadmap for RCS prediction tools
  • Share your knowledge and expertise with junior engineers to help them grow in their career through mentoring and developing / delivering training.
  • Communicate across the engineering disciplines and technology areas to integrate capabilities and communicate technical capabilities and analyses with internal stakeholders and external customers (government customers and company leadership).

The NG Computational Electromagnetics Consulting Engineer will be support advanced development programs and technology research and development (R&D).   This position could be based in Redondo Beach, CA, Palmdale, CA, Melbourne, FL, or virtual remote. Pay scale may alter based on location.

Basic Qualifications

  • 20+ Years of experience with Bachelors in Science (STEM); 18+ Years of experience with Masters (STEM); 15+ Years of Experience with PhD. Bachelors, Master’s, and/or PhD in a STEM related field and robust industry related experience focused in LO.
  • Expert knowledge of first principles method of moments direct solve computational electromagnetic code and optimization schema
  • Familiarity with parallel supercomputing optimization of CEM code
  • Familiarity with CAD model meshing
  • Familiarity with antenna design and modeling
  • Must have a current DoD Secret clearance and a periodic reinvestigation, or an original adjudication date completed within the last 6 years
  • Previous experience working in a SAP/SAR environment
  • Ability to obtain SAP access

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience with a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics or Mathematics with emphasis in electromagnetics and robust industry related experience with 15 years of LO focused experience.
  • Knowledge of RF material characterization, performance, and application in LO design (including metamaterials)
  • Analyze and explain similarities and differences between predicted RCS data to measured RCS for full scale component data, full scale vehicle data and flight test data
  • Familiarity with Atlassian tools use for code development
  • Experience with RCS data processing tools, such as Knowbell, Pioneer or Saber
  • Experience with in-house or commercial Method of Moments codes such as SENTRi or HFSS
  • Experience in survivability component design such as propulsion, edges, airframe, door / panel / cover technologies
  • Knowledge of domain specific radar principles, including signal processing, target acquisition, target tracking, resource management, discrimination, and battle management interfaces
  • Technical leadership experience, translating stakeholder or customer requirements into executable project plans and managing to successful completion
  • Lead independent review teams, uncover, and resolve complex challenges, and present results to all levels of leadership
  • Active DoD Top Secret clearance with SSBI, or Active DoD Top Secret with SCI within 4 years of last investigation
  • Program access to all major NGAS programs.

This position reports to Redondo Beach, CA, USA, however, you are able to work from any of the additional 3 locations listed above.


Salary Range: $180,400 USD - $270,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
