Job Summary

This role is for a Mission Engineering Manager reporting to the Director, Mission Development & Engineering for the Rapid Innovative Systems Environment (RISE) Business Unit. RISE BU’s mission areas span national and tactical systems supporting a variety of Department of Defense (DoD) and Restricted Space customers. The Mission Engineering Manager will be responsible for the overall management of a federated team of 15-20 mission engineers and modeling & simulation analysts supporting multiple priority captures, program execution, and cross-cutting work to characterize and assess space system performance and support the design of technical solutions to achieve necessary performance for mission success. This role reports functionally to the Mission Engineering & Operations Center. This job encompasses both team leadership (75%) and technical performance (25%) roles.

Role and Responsibilities

Primary job responsibilities include:

  • Lead and manage a federated team of 15-20 mission engineers supporting multiple captures and executing programs

  • Manage Non Contractual Technical Activity (NCTA) budgets (to include IWOs from other NG entities) assigned to mission engineering and ensure adherence to cost targets as well as updating monthly EACs

  • Manage pop-up and walk-in work process and ensure support to rapid, quick-turn engineering tasks; work with stakeholders to develop and scope tasks and ensure available budget to execute

  • Assign mission engineering personnel to captures and ensure that capture ME leads have team skillsets

  • Maintain pool of available SMEs across the company to support mission engineering tasks on an “as-needed” basis

  • Manage tool development execution and the development of relevant training curricula in partnership with SSSD Engineering

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to lead mission engineers assigned to specific captures or programs; participate in goal-setting meetings, midyear reviews, and end-of-year reviews as needed

  • Disseminate leadership flowdown to mission engineering teams and ensure team engagement in Business Unit activities and initiatives

  • Develop mission-level briefings for senior leadership and external customers showcasing mission engineering and analysis products to drive thought leadership and showcase NG capabilities

  • As needed, support proposal development activities for studies/CRADs or major pursuits

  • As needed, support mission engineering technical execution on tasks

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited university in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline with 9+ years of experience in engineering OR Master's degree from an ABET accredited university in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline with 7+ years of experience in engineering

  • Prior management experience leading a team and supporting multiple programs

  • Prior experience managing budget and schedule (e.g. IRAD PI, NCTA management, CAM for program execution scope)

  • Active SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within 6 years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math)

  • Excellent interpersonal skills 

  • Experience interfacing with senior management, peers, and employees

  • Self-directed technical leader with strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Aptitude to develop and execute to a strategy 

  • Demonstrated experience in Systems Engineering on Space Program

  • Prior experience with mission engineering activities

  • Experience executing efforts with multiple NG Space divisions or NG sectors

  • Experience with both air and space programs

  • Current SAP clearances or recent SAP experience


Salary Range: $176,100 USD - $264,100 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
