Northrop Grumman, Strategic Space Systems Division, has an opening for a Manager Engineering 3 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Space Park Redondo Beach, California.

The selected candidate will manage the Parts, Materials, and Processes (PM&P) Department in Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach, CA.  The PM&P Department supports SSSD programs by evaluating, characterizing, qualifying, and selecting the parts, materials, and assembly processes used to build deliverable hardware.  PM&P develops fundamental material properties and allowables used in design and authors and maintains part, material, and manufacturing process specifications. In addition, PM&P leads and supports failure analyses for unplanned events including the determination of root cause and implementation of corrective action. The PM&P Department has expertise in composite design, fabrication, and repair; metallic materials and joining; polymers, coatings, and sealants; micro- and macro-electronics, EEE parts and their screening; technical documentation; and contamination control.

The role requires providing technical leadership and oversight for the department as well as technical representation to both internal and external customers.  The department manager is responsible for overseeing staffing for the department to ensure adequate personnel with the required skills and clearances are on staff to perform the department’s statement of work.  The department manager is responsible for managing the annual indirect budget (labor and OIE) for training, conferences, general maintenance, consumables/supplies, and service contracts along with requesting and justifying capital acquisitions and NCTA pursuits.  The applicant will have a strong background in EEE parts, materials, assembly processes, radiation effects, and part procurement.  In addition to their technical qualifications, the PM&P Department Manger must possess excellent communication skills, as they will be a key interface with program management and executive leadership.  Finally, the department manager is responsible for the department’s performance management.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline from an accredited university

  • Seven (7) years of engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree (BS) OR 5 years of engineering experience with advanced STEM degree: Master's of Science (MS) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

  • Demonstrated knowledge in parts, materials and process selection, cost account management, manufacturing support, failure analysis, and processing of materials for space hardware

  • Proven leadership experience on projects and/or teams

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an SCI Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Chemistry or MS degree in Engineering from an accredited institution

  • Recognition within the broader organization as a Subject Matter Expert in Chemistry and Material Science

  • Familiarity with the integration and test of spacecraft

  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven leadership abilities

  • Demonstrations of excellent  communications  skills which include the ability to verbally articulate and to make effective presentations, and to prepare clear and concise written reports are desired

  • Experience managing indirect budget

  • Experience justifying capital test equipment and purchase requests

  • Active SCI and TS clearance


Salary Range: $160,200 USD - $240,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
