Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Principal Networking Engineer/Senior Principal Networks Engineer to join our team of highly skilled and motivated engineers at Northrop Grumman's Autonomous Design Center of Excellence located in San Diego, California.


You'll be joining the Avionics Integration (AI) organization. The AI organization delivers innovative and effective mission subsystem and control solutions for our system operators' current and emerging missions, by utilizing industry leading processes and tools. AI is responsible for many mission critical subsystems such as RF Communications, IP Networks, Radar, SIGINT, Electronic Warfare, EO/IR, Full Motion Video, Ground Moving Target Indicator, Weapons, Mission Management Computers, and Ground Control Systems.


Roles and Responsibilities: 

  • Support planning and evaluations of installations and/or reconfiguration of hardware and software elements of data and/or voice communication network 
  • Applies extensive technical expertise in all areas of network engineering as well as have full working knowledge of end device and how they interface with routers, firewalls, and switches 
  • Develops technical solutions to ensure all communications requirements based on future needs and current usage are met while configuring such solutions to optimize cost savings 
  • Prepares or ensures that appropriate network documentation exists, including operational instructions.
  • Exhibit the ability to work without appreciable direction and can exercise considerable latitude in determining networking objectives
  • Provides regular monitoring and network analysis regarding short- and long-range planning for in-house systems 
  • Guides the successful completion of networking objectives crucial to the program and may function in a technical leadership rol
  • Interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.  This includes but not limited to network design that include integrating with hardware and software organizations
  • The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to work in a team environment with other engineers, network and system administrators, and computer/facility organizations. Multi-tasking with good communication skills; both verbal and written are a must.

Basic Qualifications (Principal Networks Engineer):

  • Bachelor Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university and 5 or more years of Engineering experience; OR a Master Degree in a STEM discipline and 3 or more years of Engineering experience; OR a PhD in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline and 1 or more years of engineering experience
  • Moderate understanding of TCP/IP.
  • Moderate understanding of LAN concepts such as VLANS, trunking (port tagging) and spanning-tree.
  • Moderate knowledge of WAN technologies such as OSPF, EIGRP and BGP.
  • Familiarity with IP addressing design and subnets.
  • Must have a current active in-scope DoD Top Secret security clearance or DoE equivalent with the ability to gain PAR (active clearance is required to be considered for this role)
  • Ability to travel up to 25%

  • Bachelor Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university and 9 or more years of Engineering experience; OR a Master Degree in a STEM discipline and 7 or more years of Engineering experience; OR a PhD in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline and 5 or more years of engineering experience
  • Moderate understanding of TCP/IP.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using test equipment such as protocol analyzers and cable test sets.
  • Knowledge of government grade encryption gear such as TACLANES.
  • Knowledge of Cisco hardware.
  • Knowledge of classified network design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good project management skills.
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment
  • Willingness to work after hours and weekends as required.
  • DoD 8570 training and certifications.
  • Cisco and Security+ certification.

Salary Range: $104,600 USD - $157,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $129,700 USD - $194,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
