Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems sector is seeking a Principal / Senior Principal Propulsion Inlet Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our Vehicle Engineering - Flight Sciences organization in Melbourne, FL.  In this role, you will be the Inlet/Engine Compatibility focal within a Propulsion System Integration team, working with a major engine supplier, customer representatives, and related discipline teams including Aerodynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Configuration Design, Survivability, System Test, and Manufacturing.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Inlet/Engine Compatibility focal leading supplier-engaged team to develop analysis

  • Communicate results effectively to program leadership in support of program milestones

  • Facilitate efficient coordination across multiple engineering disciplines and program management

  • Represent the organization as the prime internal aerodynamics technical contact on contracts and projects

  • Interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations and companies

  • Report status to internal/external program management and IPT Leads

  • Direct junior engineers in all aspects of propulsion system aerodynamic development and analysis and development, including aerodynamic air induction system design, engine/inlet operability, thermal analysis, supplier coordination, test planning, test support, and data reduction

  • Clearly present technical approaches and findings

  • General frequent use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and advanced techniques

  • Apply technical expertise and extensive knowledge of other related disciplines.

  • Find innovative solutions to a variety of technical challenges of increasing scope and complexity

  • Lead technical analysis for substantiation data reports and airworthiness artifacts

  • Interface with test organization to ensure program objectives are accomplished, to include flight test planning, execution, and analysis

  • Perform assignments independently and work with leadership to determine the best path forward under time constraints

This requisition may be filled as a Principal Engineer (level 3) or Sr Principal Engineer (level 4) depending on the qualifications below.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Principal Propulsion Inlet Engineer:  Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years’ experience; OR Master’s degree and 3+ years’ experience

  • Senior Principal Propulsion Inlet Engineer: Bachelor’s degree and 9+ years’ experience; OR Master’s degree and 7+ years’ experience

  • At least one degree must be in a relevant Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline

  • Familiarity with engine thermodynamic cycles

  • Test Experience in a relevant discipline (i.e., Wind Tunnel Test, Engine Ground Test, Flight Test)

  • Effective communication and presentation skills

  • Excellent analysis and problem-solving skills

  • Self-directed and able to perform assignments independently

  • Active DoD Secret clearance or higher (with a background investigation completed within the last 6 years or under continuous evaluation)

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Program Access prior to the commencement of employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

  • Experience in inlet/engine operability and familiarity with AIR-1419B, ARP1420, SAE5656

  • Experience with survivable aircraft design

  • Air induction system design and test experience

  • Experienced at risk, issue, and opportunity identification, management, and resolution

  • Lead Test Experience preferred

  • Proficient in MATLAB and Excel

  • Experience leading a project or team

Salary Range: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD
Salary Range 2: $112,000 USD - $168,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
