The Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) Advanced Processing Solutions (APS) Business pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines the leading edge of exotic new technologies, and drives advances in the sciences. The Network Information Solutions (NIS) APS sector is seeking a Staff Engineer Drawing Checker to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals who will be responsible for examining drawings of various mechanical design efforts, such as microelectronics packaging design, cryogenic component design, and other related efforts. In this role, you will examine engineering drawings and related documents for soundness, efficiency, and simplicity in design; completeness, clarity, and dimensional accuracy; correctness of materials and processes; conformity to design/drafting standards, design specifications, and practicability; and economy of fabrication, assembly, and installation. Types of hardware includes bracketry, mechanical fixtures, tooling. You are expected to have experience in mechanical design or analysis principles, processes, and tools, including skill in the use of standard design tools, such as 2D CAD platforms (preferably AutoCAD), and 3D CAD platforms (preferably SolidWorks and/or Siemens NX). You are also expected to be familiar with current fabrication/machine shop practices to provide guidance to engineers for design manufacturability and drawing clarity. You must be able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance requiring a CI polygraph.


This position requires work onsite at our Advanced Technologies Laboratory located in the Linthicum, MD and/or Annapolis Junction, MD area.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing 10-50 engineering drawings per week for technical accuracy
  • Providing subject matter expert (SME) input at configuration change boards (CCBs) and design review (DR) meetings
  • Training and developing junior engineers in sound engineering design and documentation practices
  • Supporting the design of cutting-edge mechanical components for use in cryogenic systems and subsystems - interfacing with electrical design counterparts, physicists, thermal and structural analysts, and manufacturing teams throughout the entire project lifecycle
  • Supporting the drafting of engineering documentation associated with mechanical design and assembly.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science subject area with 14+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering or related area, Master's Degree with 12+ years of experience, or PhD with 9+ years of post-doctorate experience. An additional 4 years of relevant experience in mechanical design engineering or related area in lieu of degree.
  • Experience with reviewing engineering design documentation
  • Strong understanding of current fabrication/machine shop practices
  • Experience in mechanical design or analysis principles, processes, and tools
  • Experience with SolidWorks, Siemens NX, or other 3D modeling software
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • High attention-to-detail
  • Experience with mentoring junior engineers in skill development
  • Must be able to obtain a TS/SCI clearance; U.S Citizenship is a prerequisite.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DOD TS/SCI Clearance
  • Effective verbal and written communication, ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong passion and ability to learn new information quickly and apply technical skills.
  • Experience with cryogenic systems
  • Experience with electronics packaging and cabling
  • Experience with PCB design and drafting.
  • Experience with wiretabs and assembly instructions
  • Experience with AutoCAD

This position reports to Linthicum, MD, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Annapolis Junction, MD, MD, USA.


Salary Range: $139,400 USD - $209,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
