The Sr. Principal Chief Engineer is the definitive technical authority for all aspects of engineering on all program elements and leads a multi-discipline engineering team managing the technical performance of the program meeting cost and schedule requirements.  Responsibilities include leading multidisciplinary product development teams, serving as a technical expert and advisor, consulting with customers on solutions for challenging requirements, and providing cost estimates for proposals.  Knowledge of composite and metal aircraft and launch vehicle structures, sub-systems, and performance characteristics is required. Understanding of Requirements Development, components and assembly level design, analysis, and manufacturing approaches is essential.  


Essential Functions:

  • Performs technical planning, leads execution, and ensures compliance with requirements on new and existing programs.
  • Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of requirements into solutions that comply with technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
  • Ensures the program is adhering to sound engineering processes in the development, production, test, and sustainment of products for our customers in compliance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Leads resolution of technical problems, challenges, and manufacturing discrepancies.  Identifies cause and implements corrective actions.
  • Works with external customers and internal subject matter experts to provide technical solutions and cost estimates for challenging applications.
  • Leads functional analysis, timeline analysis, trade studies, requirements allocation, and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into design products, specifications, and manufacturing planning.
  • Assesses and tracks Risks and Opportunities.  Identifies and ensures execution of mitigation plans and pursues opportunities.
  • Leads teams towards minimum weight and cost solutions.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor of Science and 9 years of engineering experience OR 7 years with Master of Science Degree
  • Experience with the development of advanced composite and metal structures to aerospace requirements
  • Must have an active DoD Secret (or higher) clearance (with a background investigation within the past 5 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance after start of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline
  • Expertise with one or more of the following fields: Design Engineering, Structural Analysis, Manufacturing Engineering, or Systems Engineering
  • Experience with the certification of aerospace structures
  • Experience with direct interface and collaboration with customer representatives

Salary Range: $112,000 USD - $168,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
