Tool Designer / Checker

Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems is recruiting for a Designer/Checker to support the team at the Promontory, Utah facility.

Candidate will be responsible for the concept, design, fabrication drawings, inspection requirements, procurement requirements, verification requirements, and fabrication support for tooling and equipment for Aerospace applications. Candidate will also be responsible for engineering drawing and related document examination for soundness, efficiency, and simplicity in design; completeness, clarity, and dimensional accuracy; correctness of materials and processes; conformity to design/drafting standards, design specifications, and practicability; and economy of fabrication, assembly, and installation.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Interface with review team to assure customer satisfaction with design

• Interface with engineers to understand mechanical drawings and make appropriate corrections.

• Managing projects and coordinate all procurements and fabrication to meet the program cost and schedule requirements

• Inspect fabricated support hardware to assure compliance to design

• Work alongside the manufacturing team to ensure overall program quality, delivery, and cost objectives are achieved  

• Work with internal Customers to concept needed support equipment for new and existing programs

• Developing tooling concepts, creating/reviewing and improving manufacturing processes to meet Customer requirements

• Work closely with Tool Engineers to create final drawings.

• Understand/monitor cost and schedule

• Review engineering drawings and designs for manufacturability

• Support vendors as needed during fabrication

• Inspect tool configuration for drawing compliance, including fit, form and function

• Support continuous improvement 

• Support Operations and Process Engineering in the use of all tooling

• Evaluate tool designs for compliance to Northrop Grumman (IPHM, HOPS,), as well as industry dimension and tolerancing standards (ASME Y14.5M-2009).

• Evaluate design to determine manufacturability of tool design including proper dimensioning to produce an acceptable, functional tool.

• Evaluate design for functionality to ensure tool will perform per user request.

• Review design package for completeness.

• Communicate the changes needed in a concise but direct manner.

• Experience and familiarity with machine ship and weld shop practices.

Requirements:

• Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Design with 2 years experience OR

• Associates Degree with 4 years experience in Mechanical Design

• Experience can be considered in lieu of Bachelors Degree requiring 7 years experience

Position may be filled at higher leveling requiring:

• Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Design with 5 years experience OR

• Associates Degree with 6 years experience in Mechanical Design

• Experience can be considered in lieu of Bachelors Degree requiring 9 years experience

• Technical experience in design and fabrication of special tooling and related equipment.

• Demonstrated ability to evaluate vendor and equipment capability and ability to perform required tasks to include production of tooling as well as unique aerospace part production.

• NX modeling and drafting experience.

• Candidates with hands-on mechanical aptitude and knowledge of manufacturing methods excel in this position.

• Proficient in use dimension and tolerancing standard ASME Y14.5M – 2009.

• Tool drawing creation and interpretation. (Actual drafting software used is not critical but knowledge of tooling drawing and associated formatting is necessary.)

Salary Range: $64,600 USD - $97,000 USD

Salary Range 2: $79,700 USD - $119,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
