NG Space Systems – Propulsion Systems is currently seeking a Principal/Sr. Principal HPC Applications Engineer with experience in modeling & simulation and High Performance Computing (HPC) to manage and develop our Promontory, UT based HPC applications and services.

Description & Responsibilities:

This position oversees the development, operation and administration of HPC systems and support services used by more than 20 different Northrop Grumman business units spanning Space , Defense and Aeronautics sectors.  The position reports to the Science and Engineering organization and coordinates closely with the corporate IT organization. 

Job Duties:

  • Provide adequate HPC capacity and support services for multiple research, development, & production programs across NG

  • Guide development and promote new and existing uses of HPC resources and technologies including CFD, FEA, Computation Chemistry, Design Optimization, Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence

  • Provide day to day support (technical/non-technical) & administration of HPC services, including user training, problem resolution, resources & priorities management

  • Manage and direct contractor activities which includes system administration, software installation & troubleshooting, implementing user and resource scheduling policies, evaluating new technology and systems

  • Proactively assess capacity and service needs, develop rationale for changes/upgrades, provide budget input to business & IT leadership

  • Chair the HPC Steering Committee which oversees the service & makes decisions regarding system & policy changes

  • Manage Hardware/Software supplier relationships

  • Work with various internal IT & other groups (networking, finance, supply chain, InfoSec, IT management, facilities) to ensure quality of service, & comply with NG standards and processes

  • Interact with other Northrop Grumman HPC teams for technical interchange,  address common issues, evaluate new and emerging technologies including cloud HPC

Experience Requirements:

  • 5+ years using mathematical modeling & computer simulation methods such as finite element analysis (FEA) or computational fluid dynamics (CFD), in the areas of product design & research

  • Familiarity with HPC technology – Linux clusters, high performance storage, processors, high speed network interconnects, job schedulers

  • Linux/Python scripting & programming knowledge desired

Skills

  • Strong skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel

  • Fundamental knowledge of Unix/Linux commands & operating systems

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including physical & virtual presentations

  • Project management and organizational skills

Competencies for Success:

  • Familiarity with numerical methods for solving systems of equations on a digital computer (Ex. FEA, CFD, Heat Transfer)

  • People skills are essential for this position as it involves project management activities, chairing the HPC Steering Committee and implementing policies, interaction and involvement with or NG HPC teams and corporate IT groups, facilities groups, hardware/software supplier liaison

  • Problem solving ability when conflicting program priorities arise for HPC capacity. Confidence in interacting with engineering & program managers.

  • Linux scripting, Python, XML knowledge

Educational Requirements:

  • BS degree in Engineering (prefer mechanical/aerospace/civil) 5 experience with BS degree or 3 years’ experience with a MS

  • Position can be filled one level higher, 9 years with BS or 7 with a MS


Salary Range: $87,600 USD - $131,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $108,600 USD - $163,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
