Northrop Grumman Space Systems designs, builds, and delivers space, defense, and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; satellites and associated space components and services; and advanced aerospace structures.

We are currently seeking an Senior Engineering Manager to lead teams of Mission Assurance Chief Engineers (MACEs) and System Safety Engineers in support of the Utah Bacchus, Clearfield, and Promontory campuses as well as Kennedy Space Center (KSC).

This individual will oversee a team of engineers supporting a broad range of propulsion system products for NASA, commercial, and strategic programs.

Role description & Responsibilities:

The Senior Engineering Manager is responsible to:

  • Provide leadership and oversight to:

    • A team of approximately 20 Mission Assurance Chief Engineers, across four locations, responsible for the overall compliance to regulatory, contractual, and procedural requirements for the specific programs they are assigned.
    • A team of approximately 8 System Safety Engineers, across four locations (including remote employees), responsible for risk management, system-level failure mode identification, and other program reliability measures.
  • Utilize effective talent management strategies to attract, retain, develop, and engage outstanding people for the organization.
  • Be the face of Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) at the program level to the applicable internal and external customers, including Navy, NASA, AF, LM, DCMA.
  • Develop, communicate, and implement vision, strategy, goals and metrics to achieve business objectives for safety, quality, customer satisfaction, schedule, cost, and continuous improvement
  • Represent and communicate S&MA technical capabilities and technologies to internal and external customers 
  • Manage workloads, ensure staffing needs are fulfilled, and programs are appropriately resourced
  • Ensure leadership and key subject matter expert succession plans are in place and be proactive by coaching and mentoring key talent to assume increased responsibilities
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with other Propulsion Systems organizations including Program Management, Operations, Process Engineering, Science and Engineering, and other groups within Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA)
  • Manage material and labor budgets

Minimum Requirements:  

  • Candidate must have a Bachelor's degree and a minimum 15 years of experience in an engineering or related technical field
  • Extensive knowledge of the role of Quality Engineering and Quality Assurance
  • Knowledge in related industry standards, programmatic and contractual requirements, and risk-based decision making
  • Demonstrated understanding of programmatic needs and expectations across the strategic, commercial, and NASA business lanes
  • Demonstrated team leadership skills – formal engineering or operations leadership experience and/or significant technical projects or investigations
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization and with internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including the ability to coach, develop, and mentor others
  • Ability to lead a highly experienced team of professionals and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
  • Ability to drive change through creating, sustaining, and improving standards and procedures
  • Broad understanding of NG command media, including the importance for compliance
  • Ability to acquire a Secret security clearance
  • Travel between Utah campuses – Bacchus (Magna), Clearfield, and Promontory – is expected
  • Out-of-state travel expectation of 1% – 5%

Preferred Requirements: 

  • Experience and knowledge of CM principles

  • Demonstrated Lean Manufacturing experience
  • Graduate degree (MS, MBA, PhD) in engineering or related technical discipline
  • Certifications in quality related disciplines

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present and communicate with a broad range of audiences (program management, customers, functional department leadership, and operations)

  • Interpersonal skills and organizational savvy to ensure success:  easily relate well to a wide variety of diverse styles, build diverse networks, be quick to find common ground, and collaborate well with others

  • Demonstrated critical problem solving skills

This position reports to Magna, UT, USA, however, you are able to work from any of the additional 2 locations listed above.


Salary Range: $138,400 USD - $207,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
