The Defense Systems Sector Digital Transformation team seeks a Digital Design Core Functional Lead (CFL) to support the development of future digital engineering capabilities for the sector and support the enterprise as part of the newly formed corporate Digital Transformation Office (DTO). The selected candidate will support the development of a portfolio of next-generation enterprise Digital Engineering capabilities. These capabilities will drive enhanced collaboration with manufacturing and supply chain as well as advancements in modeling and simulation, digital thread, design automation and Dev*Ops. The candidate will also help shape Defense Systems’ Digital Engineering strategy and lead projects that deploy our next-generation Digital Engineering capabilities to sites throughout Defense Systems. The primary location for this position is McLean, Virginia but the selected candidate can work on-site at one of our major Northrop Grumman sites such as (Huntsville, AL, Rocket Center, WV, Elkton, MD, Plymouth, MN, Oklahoma City, OK, Lake Charles, LA, Warner Robins, GA, and Orlando, FL).
This position reports to the Defense Systems Sector Director of Engineering and will be matrixed to the Defense Systems Sector Director of Digital Transformation. The primary responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:
- Work with the Defense Systems Sector Director of Engineering and operating divisions to incorporate digital engineering into functional roadmaps, improvement plans, policies and technical talent needs.
- Identify the right digital engineering processes and tools to use to solve our Defense Systems programs challenges
- Help teams implement digital engineering processes, such as Agile, Dev*Ops, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Virtual Simulation & Testing, and Model Based Engineering practices and tools
- Oversee the performance of geographically separated Agile teams and work effectively with cross-functional and cross-sector individuals within those teams
- Consult with teams and engineers, including direct participation in working sessions, to provide guidance, and help them work through challenges related to adopting digital engineering
- Some engineers are new to Digital Engineering, and you’ll help them get up to speed and become effective practitioners
- Develop and summarize status, data and metrics to support project reviews with the DTO and Defense Systems senior leadership
- Provide informal training on digital engineering processes and tools
- Develop and maintain the DTO digital engineering vision and roadmaps for the candidate’s capability portfolio
- Define a common baseline enterprise change management approach for deploying the candidate’s digital capability portfolio
- Functional management responsibility (staffing, career development, performance reviews, etc) for 5-10 DS sector engineering staff that support various Digital Transformation projects
Basic Qualifications:
- A Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) bachelor’s degree and at least 9 years of experience or a master’s degree in or higher in STEM and at least 7 years of experience supporting execution of technical projects, captures, or functional teams
- Ability to travel to other Northrop Grumman sites at least 25% of the time
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 2 years of experience in a technical leadership role with demonstrated ability to integrate cross functional teams
- Experience configuring, integrating, and deploying commercial software solutions (ex CAMEO, DOORs, JIRA, STK, CREO, Teamcenter, etc) and tool-to-tool interfaces to enable the product development lifecycle
- Ability to coach others throughout the organization to manage key elements of the transformation
- Experience with agile execution and common tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Sharepoint, Excel
- Diverse capture (proposal, capture, BD) program, or functional experience from life cycle (Design, Build, Sustain), to type (Fixed Price, Cost Plus, T&M) and beyond. Experience managing execution (cost, schedule, risk/opportunity, resource management/staffing), and reporting status.
- Ability to roll-up sleeves to design digital solutions, deploy/implement solutions, and clearly communicate value
- Experience communicating detailed information quickly and easily to functional and program leadership
- Builds and manages key stakeholder relationships with the ability to influence (sector and enterprise functional leadership, programs, divisions, peers and customers, without direct authority. An effective communicator at various levels. Acts as a change champion to inspire and excite workforce to adopt DT solutions
- Builds followership; Build and lead a high performing, diverse team to successfully execute throughout your Sector. Identify program “change agents” to maximize digital solution adoption.
- Ability to develop sector, or program-wide objectives, strategies or roadmaps and communicate the strategic development and implementation plan.
- Ability to identify new opportunities and apply emerging technologies to the portfolio enabling Engineering efficiency throughout the Enterprise. Collaborate with peer CFL’s at each Sector to influence supplier development strategies to enable and accelerate Digital Transformation.
- Understanding of various indirect project types and funding processes – Capital, NCTA, IRAD, Overhead
- Understanding and experience with Organizational Change Management and driving business change
- Understanding of the Sector functional priorities and how digital transformation solutions can be applied to meet the Sector's strategic objectives. Ability to develop strategic roadmaps including plans to incorporate new/emerging technologies and drive the develop and plan investments required to meet the roadmap
- Experience leading cross-functional engineering teams
- Systems design skills/systems thinker – demonstrated experience applying systems thinking skills and systems engineering techniques to meet complex system requirements
- Active security clearance
