Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division (SSSD) has an opening for a Structural Design Engineer/Principal Structural Design Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in the Vehicle Products Center. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, CA.
 

The Structural Design Engineer will be responsible for engineering the preliminary, conceptual, and detailed design of Space craft components, sub-systems, and systems, including the creation of detailed simulation models and drawing release, and the coordination of manufacturing, integration, test, and delivery of the space vehicle structures.
 

The responsibilities of the Structural Design Engineer include (but are not limited to):

  • Design major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
  • Check completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
  • Make layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures.
  • Identify design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommend revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
  • Provide technical oversight.
  • Responsible for cost and schedule associated to SOW.
  • Resolve system-level issues and constraints, such as stress, structural integrity, thermal, dynamics, and critical clearances.
  • Perform requirements definition, conceptual design, preliminary / layout, and detail design, drawing release, design review presentations, and support to fabrication/integration.
  • Work closely with stress, manufacturing, M&P, and test to develop design requirements, define structural load paths, develop CAD models and prepare engineering drawings to fabricate flight and structural test articles.
  • Interface with other cross-functional groups, customers, and vendors.
  • Support Program milestone reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, IDR, etc.) and Gate Closure/Lien Closures.
  • Create a culture of trust.
     

This requisition may be filled at either a Structural Design Engineer level or Principal Structural Design Engineer level based on the qualifications listed below.
 

Basic Qualifications for Structural Design Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university with 2 years of engineering experience OR Master’s Degree in STEM with 0 years of engineering experience
  • Prior work experience in space subsystems design, mechanical design integration, or related engineering experience.
  • Proficiency in a CAD system.
  • Candidate must currently have, and be able to maintain, a Department of Defense Top Secret clearance OR SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)
     

Basic Qualifications for Principal Structural Design Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university with 5 years of engineering experience OR Master’s Degree in STEM with 3 years of engineering experience OR Ph.D. in STEM with 0 years of engineering experience
  • Prior work experience in space subsystems design, mechanical design integration, or related engineering experience.
  • Proficiency in a CAD system.
  • Candidate must currently have, and be able to maintain, a Department of Defense Top Secret clearance OR SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with spacecraft design, integration and test
  • Active DoD Top Secret Clearance with current Polygraph OR SCI with current Polygraph
  • Proficiency in CATIA V5 and/or CATIA 3DX
  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
  • EVMS/CAM, and Project Management experience

Salary Range: $85,000 USD - $127,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $104,600 USD - $157,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
