The Tactical Space System Mechanical Engineering organization is seeking a senior level Staff Mechanical/Structural Analysis Engineer to assist an experienced team of mechanical engineers performing mechanical and structural analysis on one or more spacecraft systems or subsystems. Desired requirements are as follows:

  • Have experience with spacecraft structural dynamic analysis performing evaluation of transient, sine, random, acoustic and shock environments.
  • Experience using NASTRAN
  • Derive component and spacecraft level dynamic environments and develop specifications
  • Have experience with Craig Bampton model reductions
  • Ability to conduct dynamic testing of spacecraft and components
  • Ability to work independently, be a technical lead, coordinate work with mechanical systems / programs as needed

In addition to above, perform other mechanical analysis tasks as per planned work. Responsibilities may include the following:

  • Performing static and dynamic structure analysis.
  • Reviewing requirements for materials, structure systems & subsystems.
  • Selecting appropriate technical information and data from applicable products.
  • Determining the technical principles involved, identifying the design path forward and computing the engineering characteristics to ensure consistency with the specifications design needs and requirements of space applications.
  • Releasing results as “technical documents” after review by the senior members of the team.
  • Developing innovative solutions and elaborating on design concepts.
  • Evaluating completed designs with supervisor and other technical groups, and making modifications necessary to achieve the most ideal design. 
  • Developing, coordinating, and conducting test programs required to evaluate design work.

Basic Qualifications for Staff Mechanical/Structural Engineer 5:

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineer, Math or related area (Mechanical Engineering or Degrees with a focus in Structural Analysis highly preferred) and 14+ years of experience or Master’s Degree and 12+ years; 9 years of experience with PhD.
  • Experience performing structural engineering tasks associated with analysis, design, and/or testing of structures.
  • Experience with at least one of the following Mechanical Analysis tools such as NX FEMAP/NASTRAN, ABAQUS, HYPERMESH. (Equivalent spacecraft structural analysis tools may be considered on a case by case basis).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with spacecraft or subsystem static/dynamic testing

  • Experience utilizing MATLAB


Salary Range: $161,000 USD - $241,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
