Northrop Grumman  Space  Systems sector is seeking a System Safety Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals.  This position will be located in our Linthicum, MD location and can support a hybrid schedule where most of the work will be done on-site, but we can accommodate partial teleworking upon business/program need.

System Safety Engineering utilizes System engineering processes and tools to drive the overall system design to meet Safety requirements to minimize the risk inherent in payload operations while maximizing mission reliability and success. System Safety Engineering is involved in all phases of a program life cycle, from proposal generation to launch operations. System Safety Engineering interfaces with Program Offices, Customers and Ranges to ensure that our systems meet safety requirements while providing high reliability to the customer.  System Safety Engineers are expected to understand how the different components, subsystems, systems and integrated launch vehicle function and interact, with a focus on System Safety. The System Safety Engineering effort includes interacting as part of a multi-disciplined engineering team to develop system architecture and constituent elements for new and existing flight programs, as well as new business concepts and proposals.

Responsibilities:

  • Define, implement and verify System Safety requirements to ensure that the inherent risks are mitigated.
  • Apply the systems engineering process to define and verify launch vehicle and ground support equipment requirements to ensure safe operations and conduct system safety analyses to architect and implement a safe and robust system.
  • Develop safety documents as required to support customer and test/operational range requirements and assist with defining, tracking, and gathering safety requirements verification artifacts.
  • Present System Safety status at design reviews and working groups.
  • Aid in the preparation, review, and acceptance of launch range safety documentation in accordance with AFSPCMAN 91-710.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate hazards present in spacecraft using the process described MIL-STD-882. Plan, develop, and aid in the execution of new hazardous manufacturing and test procedures.

​The following qualifications are mandatory:

  • Bachelor's + 2 years of exp; Master's + 0 years of exp or in lieu of degree must have 6 years of directly related sys safety range experience is required.
  • Principal - Bachelor's + 5 years of exp: Master's + 3 years of exp; PhD + 0 years of exp.
  • The ability to obtain a DoD TS/SCI clearance is required.
  • Experience with systems engineering and system safety processes.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills required to communicate with all levels from internal employees to customers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Established relationships with Range Safety Personnel.
  • Experience with pa.
  • Experience developing or understanding of the Missile System Prelaunch Safety Package (MSPSP) process.
  • Experience in launch vehicle system integration, testing and evaluation.
  • Experience in presenting in front of customers and DoD personnel.
  • Experience in development and maintenance of requirements control documents and related processes.
  • Experience using requirements management tools such as DOORS.
  • Experience with Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) and CAMEO.

Salary Range: $73,600 USD - $110,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $90,600 USD - $136,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
