The EHS Associate/Engineer will play a role in the execution of various elements of the site's health and safety management system. Provide support in daily matters with an emphasis on safety and industrial hygiene and the implementation of a comprehensive Occupational Safety and Health program. This includes but is not limited to conducting safety and health training programs, conducting employee exposure assessments for air contaminants and noise, coordinating annual auditory exams and respirator fit testing, and conducting indoor air quality inspections. This position is also responsible for maintaining electronic and physical records related to many of these programs and assists with the developing and maintenance of written compliance programs.
The position will contribute to maintaining a safety culture aimed at eliminating hazards, reducing injuries and illnesses, and the continuous improvement of our processes. This position requires the individual to work closely and positively interact with a variety of different stakeholders in an engineering and manufacturing design setting. This position will be located in Dulles, VA.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following essential functions:
- Provide health and safety expertise to maintain established successful programs.
- Prepare hazard evaluations and risk assessments to characterize workplace hazards and identify and track the implementation of controls.
- Inspect facilities for compliance with company safety policies and applicable regulations; develop practices to ensure that everyone from the shop floor to management is engaged in creating and maintaining a safer workplace.
- Performs inspections of work sites, including review of hazardous materials, life safety, emergency response, industrial hygiene and fire hazards exposures.
- Perform environmental health/industrial hygiene investigations, studies, and evaluations, which may include environmental sampling, comparing results to current standards or criteria and complete the written evaluation of the results.
- Conducts qualitative and quantitative hazard assessments to include exposure monitoring for physical and chemical agents.
- Conduct various industrial hygiene samplings, such as gas, 02, and noise test to insure safe working conditions.
- Partners with the Facilities Group and Management to support the integration of Safety into the design of new or altered processes and operations and building construction and renovation projects.
- Support the site's environmental, health, safety, and fire protection programs.
- Advise management of accident prevention measures through continuous review of conditions and behaviors; participate in designing improvements and solutions.
- Support managers and supervisors with accident response, investigation and root cause analysis; be part of any solutions and improvements.
- Oversee, medical surveillance program, regulatory compliance, safety training, facility safety inspections and test material safety evaluation and reviews.
- Assist in managing environmental programs including ensuring that proper and current Federal and State permits, and licenses are maintained.
- Maintain database of various certifications, SDS, safety manuals and other documents.
- Design, plan, and implement procedures for the prevention, control, and remediation of health hazards.
- Assist with the hazardous waste program including classifying all hazardous wastes, collection of hazardous wastes throughout the facility, storage of the hazardous wastes, and arranging for timely removal of the wastes from the facility with licensed waste disposal companies.
- Conduct regular in-house EHS inspections of the facility, materials, and equipment.
- Develop classroom and/or computerized safety related training programs and conduct the required training.
This position can be filled as an Associate Engineer (level 1) or Engineer (level 2) depending on candidate experience and qualifications.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science Degree Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science or a related field (4 years of related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree)
- Minimum of 0-2 years (level 1) or 2+ years (level 2) of experience in health & Safety Programs implementing initiatives in a manufacturing environment.
- U.S. citizen
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD TS/SCI Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in completing industrial hygiene assessments/sampling and assessing the health impact of physical and chemical agents.
- Knowledge and/or experience with RF radiation, laser operation and ionizing radiation.
- Experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
- Ability to analyze complex problems and to develop innovative solutions based on sound industrial hygiene and/or safety engineering principles.
- Good understanding of chemistry and its application to personal protective equipment (PPE) selection, chemical processes and compatibilities.
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NIOSH, ANSI, NEC, and NFPA regulations and standards.
- Master of Science (MS) degree in an industrial hygiene, engineering, environmental science, safety sciences or a related field, with 4+ years of demonstrated safety experience in the aerospace industry.
- Current CIH or CSP certification is a plus.
- Experience with supporting EHS programs for manufacturing and testing of electrical equipment.
- Computer based skills specifically with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point programs.
- Experience with Microsoft SharePoint and Tableau.
- Experience with application of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and/or international building codes to hazardous materials use and storage.
- Good understanding of chemistry and its application to personal protective equipment (PPE) selection, chemical processes and compatibilities.
