Northrop Grumman Defense Systems sector is currently seeking an Aircraft Low Observable Mechic 3 or 4 located at MCAS Miramar San Diego, CA. to perform and/or assist with Depot-Level modifications and TCTD maintenance actions at customer locations across the US as part of Contract Field Team (CFT).

The successful candidate will be a specialist in one of the following disciplines and will perform primarily in that role:

Prepares composite or metallic surfaces for coating applications by performing various operations such as sanding, stripping, applying vacuum, performing porosity testing, masking and other preparation tasks. Mixes and applies sealants, gap fillers and any other required processes prior to paint which may require the use of heating devices. Mixes and applies paints and other coatings at the proper spraying consistency. Applies additional surface details to manufacturer specifications. Performs or coordinates component-level testing for specification compliance after applications have been completed. May perform similar duties in aircraft build, modification or maintenance role. Other Maintenance, Qualifications or general duties as assigned. 

Additionally, all team members will perform other duties as part of a Contract Field Team (CFT) responsible for depot level modifications performed at customer locations. As part of the CFT, members are expected to assist in other technical disciplines as requested by team leads or management.

Overtime, weekends and holiday work may be required.

This requisition is open for levels 3-4.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Level 3: High School Diploma or GED with a minimum of 4 Years aircraft painting, Low Observables experience or Airframes/Structural Maintenance experience.
  • Level 4: High School Diploma or GED with a minimum of 6 Years aircraft painting, Low Observables experience or Airframes/Structural Maintenance experience.
  • Air Force 7 Level or US Navy /Marine Corps CDI/CDQAR, or industry equivalent such as an A&P.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical data.
  • Must have an Active Secret Clearance or higher (US Citizenship required).
  • Must be able to successfully complete and pass required F-35 trainings (Advanced Technical Training and/or Cadre Course) for Continued Employment.
  • Must be willing to provide temporary support to our other CFT locations at NAS Lemoore, NAS Fallon, MCAS Cherry Point, MCAS Beaufort or MCAS Yuma should the need arise.
  • Able to meet the physical demands of this position, including:  regularly required to lift up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive movements, work overhead, use hands to grasp, handle, and/or feel, reach. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, squat, crawl, and twist.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • F-35 Aircraft Experience.
  • Heavy mods or aircraft depot experience.
  • Fighter aircraft MRO&U experience.
  • CFT experience.
  • DoD aircraft MRO&U experience.
  • F-35, F-22, B-2, or other low observable (LO) program experience.
  • Proficient implementing Time Compliance Technical Directives (TCTD).
  • Proficient interpreting and analyzing modification engineering drawings and manufacturing/material process specifications.
  • Experience and working knowledge with F-35 sustainment tools; Product Data Manager (PDM), JSF Data Library (JDL), Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS).
  • Knowledge and experience with program change/configuration management and associated change boards for processing change requests with retrofit implications.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Business Suite.
  • Leadership experience in an aircraft maintenance environment.
  • At least 6 years overall fighter aircraft maintenance experience with thorough understanding of Fighter Aircraft Systems.
  • Experience with such programs as Aircraft Scheduling/Records Management, Job/Maintenance Control, Configuration Control, Maintenance Information Systems, Tool and FOD, Training, Safety, Security, Hazardous Waste Management and Supply Chain Management.

Desired Skills:

The following Desired Skills are not required but are those skills that would set a candidate apart from the others:

  • F-35 or Fifth generation aircraft maintenance experience or F-22, F-16, F-15, B-2, A-10, F-18, AV-8B
    and Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS) experience.
  • Understanding of USAF and/or USN/USMC maintenance practices.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills for coordinating with Field Service Representatives, and Maintenance Managers on schedules, aircraft status and issues as they occur.
  • Effective communication skills for coordination at all levels throughout maintenance structure to include Operations, Maintenance, and Logistics Support Managers.
  • Proficient in the use Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to develop and present formal briefings and presentations.
  • Ability to develop necessary maintenance plans and procedures.
  • Ability to develop work schedules and assign tasks.


Salary Range: $61,700 USD - $122,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
