Northrop Grumman's Chief Information Office is seeking a Metadata Data Management Analyst to join the Information Architecture and Governance (IAG) organization of the Chief Data Office (CDO). 

The Metadata Data Management Analyst will coordinate with business and technical data stewards in sectors and functional organizations, including the CDO, to manage data elements, metadata, and processes to drive consistent data governance, data classification, and data quality across the enterprise so that data consumers and producers can find, securely access, and use data more effectively and confidently.  We are looking for self-motivated, enthusiastic people who are excited about taking on a variety of challenges as we continue to develop an enterprise data governance program and support enterprise data & analytic solutions. Successful candidates will be able to work under only very general supervision.

We will consider fulltime, virtual telecommuting candidates for the role. Alternatively, this role can be located in Northern VA, Linthicum, MD or other major Northrop Grumman sites. Occasional travel may be required to engage with key stakeholders.  This position will consider candidates at a Level 2 or Level 3, based on years of experience and education.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Engage with business and technical data stewards in sectors and functional organizations to aid in conducting data lineage, deriving business rules (attributes, calculations, derivations, etc.), and understanding data attributes (columns) purpose and utilization

  • Enable cross-enterprise usage of data elements within the assigned sub-domain by coordinating cross-sector and functional organization’s definition and maintenance of data elements within the assigned sub-domain; drive enterprise level master data requirements to new and “in-flight projects”

  • Coordinate with business data stewards to create a quality data model, consistent across enterprise, of the data systems for the assigned domain

  • Help create enterprise level data quality metrics and reporting

  • Partner with sector and functional organization data administrators to ensure that standards and Principles and Operating Practices (PrOP) are understood and well implemented

  • Support sector and functional organization issue and resolution tasks for data issues for the data elements within the assigned domain

  • Serve as a liaison between Business and Functional areas and technology to ensure that data related business requirements for protecting sensitive data are clearly defined, communicated, well understood, and considered as part of operational prioritization and planning

  • Develop & keep inventory of the enterprise information maps of the domain or subdomain, including authoritative systems and owners

  • Support on-boarding of domain data sources to the data catalog

  • Serve as a liaison between sector and functional organizations in support of federated governance model

  • Managing day-to-day activities to ensure the data catalog/metadata processes run smoothly

  • Answering queries from various teams, troubleshooting issues, and updating metadata as needed

  • Completing various metadata audits, acting on findings as necessary, and reporting audit progress against goals to support team activities

  • Responsible for supporting the development and maintenance of a data catalog and business metadata associated with strategic data assets thereby fostering organizational data literacy and keeping compliance with data management policies and procedures

  • Support the build out of data taxonomy, data dictionary and business glossaries of data assets

  • Leverage and build domain expertise across the enterprise in support of domain driven initiatives

  • Provide input into communication routines with stakeholders, business partners, and management

  • Perform data quality audits, find data collection issues, suggest improvements, and help implement fixes

Basic Qualification for Level 2:

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 2 years of experience; master's degree in a relevant discipline. (Appropriate combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of the degree requirement).

  • Related experience in data governance/data management/quality assurance

  • Strong analytical and technical skills to troubleshoot issues, analyze the cause, quickly come-up with the possible solution(s), document the changes, and communicate to the change to the organization

  • Knowledgeable in metadata management concepts and applying them

  • Demonstrated experience with one or more major commercial metadata data catalog platforms such as Alation, Collibra, Informatica AXON, IBM Information Governance Center, Azure Data Catalog

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tool suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)

  • Ability to be able to manage changing priorities and priorities from multiple stakeholders

  • Technical Writing Experience, ability to document and describe data

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret clearance

Basic Qualification for Level 3

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 6 years of experience; 4 years of experience with a Master's degree in a relevant discipline. (Appropriate combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of the degree requirement).

  • Related experience in data governance/data management/quality assurance

  • Strong analytical and technical skills to troubleshoot issues, analyze the cause, quickly come-up with the possible solution(s), document the changes, and communicate to the change to the organization

  • Knowledgeable in metadata management concepts and applying them

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math is preferred

  • Experience in defining and implementing data governance best practices, documenting data flow & process mapping, or a data steward responsible for the metadata management, data quality and KPI tracking

  • Strong experience in documenting data requirements, data strategy and data rules (standardization, cleanse, and validation)

  • Understanding of database architecture concepts and how to navigate data lineage

  • Demonstrable experience with data metrics gathering, tracking, and reporting

  • Understanding and proven experience of information and data governance strategy, frameworks, operating models, and concepts

  • Demonstrated experience in the development of enterprise data standards and data policies

  • Experience working on complex business/technology initiatives across multiple businesses

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including drafting policies and procedures, and a demonstrated consultative approach in communication

  • Demonstrated project management skills

  • Experience with data, data analytics and/or data systems

  • Strong understanding and proven experience of information and data governance strategy, frameworks, operating models, and concepts

  • Demonstrated experience in the development of enterprise data standards and data policies

  • Experience with Aerospace and/or Defense Industry Experience

  • Experience with Agile development and methodologies

  • Management consulting or client facing delivery experience

  • Ability to multitask and work with varying levels of team members

  • Good communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

This position reports to Unknown City, VA, USA, however, you are able to work from any of the additional 4 locations listed above.


Salary Range: $66,600 USD - $115,700 USD
Salary Range 2: $86,300 USD - $142,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
