NG Space Systems – Propulsion Systems is currently seeking a Principal/Sr. Principal Software Engineer with experience in engineering Modeling & Simulation software and High Performance Computing (HPC) to manage and develop our Promontory, UT based HPC services. My also consider a remote (offsite) employee in some cases.

Description & Responsibilities:

This position oversees the operation and administration of HPC systems and support services used by more than 20 different Northrop Grumman business units spanning Space , Defense and Aeronautics sectors.  The position reports to the Science and Engineering organization and coordinates closely with the corporate IT organization. 

Job Duties:

  • Develop and promote new and existing computation uses of HPC resources and technologies including CFD, FEA, Computation Chemistry, Design Optimization, Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, etc. 

  • Day to day user support (technical/non-technical) & administration of HPC services, including problem resolution, user training, resources & priorities management

  • Manage and direct contractors’ activities which includes system administration, software installation & troubleshooting, implementing user and resource scheduling policies, evaluating new technology and systems

  • Chair the HPC Steering Committee to evaluate service & system changes/upgrades

  • Proactive assessment of capacity and service needs, develop rationale for changes/upgrades, provide budget input to NGES Sector leadership

  • Manage Hardware/Software supplier relationships

  • Work with various internal IT & other groups (networking, finance, supply chain, InfoSec, IT management, facilities) to ensure quality of service, comply with NG standards and processes

  • Interact with other NG HPC focal teams for technical interchange,  address common issues, evaluate new technologies including cloud HPC

Experience Requirements:

  • 5+ years using mathematical modeling & computer simulation techniques such as finite element analysis or computational fluid dynamics, in the area of product/system design

  • Familiarity with HPC technology – Linux clusters, high performance storage, processors, high speed network interconnects, job schedulers

  • Linux/Python scripting & programming knowledge desired


  • Strong skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel

  • Fundamental knowledge of Unix/Linux commands & operating systems

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including physical & virtual presentations

  • Project management and organizational skills

Competencies for Success:

  • Familiarity of numerical methods for solving systems of equations on a digital computer

  • People skills are essential for this position as it involves project management activities, chairing the HPC Steering Committee and implementing policies, interaction and involvement with or NG HPC focals and corporate IT groups, facilities management, hardware/software supplier liaison

  • Problem solving ability when conflicting program priorities arise for HPC capacity. Confidence in interactions with program managers from different business units and sectors

  • Linux scripting, Python, XML knowledge

Educational Requirements:

  • BS degree in Engineering (prefer mechanical/aerospace/civil) 5 experience with BS degree or 3  years’ experience with a MS

  • Position can be filled one level higher, 9 years with BS or 7 with a MS

Salary Range: $87,600 USD - $131,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $108,600 USD - $163,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
