Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Principal/Sr. Principal CNC Machining Engineer Level Level 3/4 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Clearfield, UT and will have a focus on CNC machining and trim of composite materials. This position requires an expert in a wide variety of machining related activities, including writing slash running slash debugging machine programs (Simmons and focus controllers), overseeing machining and unique one-off composite parts, writing specs for CNC machine procurement on new programs, Trim optimization on existing programs, trim consulting for new program acquisitions, planning slash maintenance slash stocking for existing machines on plant, etc. Our Research and Development team works to support process development and automation of composite aerospace structures. We engineer the latest composite structures for military/commercial aircraft and launch structures, and are leaders in next-generation composite development. We operate as principal investigators over Internal Research and Development (IRAD), Process Service (PS), and Customer Research and Development (CRAD) projects and production support, with responsible technical development as well as management of schedules and budgets. Travel varies with each project, but typically for a Principal Engineer is less than 10%, and primarily within the continental US. Responsibilities:
- Develop processes and optimize machining/trim solutions for pilot scale, demonstrators and production hardware of complex composite materials. Plan and execute the transition to production scale manufacturing and assist in defining equipment and floor plan needs.
- Manage scheduling, allocation, calibration, outfitting, upgrading, etc., of multiple machining centers on plant.
- Solve technical issues using root cause methodologies based on underlying scientific principals and an understanding of chemical processes
- Provide technical decisions and recommendations based on data and project outcomes
- Lead development efforts to reduce cost, increase process efficiency, and ensure consistent quality in support of current and future programs
- Work with internal and external partners to champion and ensure success of R&D projects
- Act as principal investigator on selected new proposals and projects
- Manage execution of the project requirements to cost and schedule objectives
- Foster an environment of cooperation and teamwork within the Process and Technology Development team
This role may be filled at a Principal or Sr. Principal CNC Machining Engineer Level 3/4 depending on the qualifications below.
Basic Qualifications:
Principal CNC Machining Engineer Level 3:
- Bachelor’s Degree in STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) and 5 years of engineering experience in the following fields: Process, Design, Product, Material, CNC Machining, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Systems, Design, Application, Aerospace, Aeronautics, Automotive, Medical Engineering, Electronics, Tooling Engineer, Development, Research OR; Masters in a STEM field with 3 years of engineering experience in mentioned fields OR; PhD in STEM with 1 year of engineering experience in mentioned fields.
- Experience in Material and Process Engineering.
- Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Clearance.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Special Program Access.
Sr. Principal CNC Machining Engineer Level 4:
- Bachelor’s Degree in STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) and 8 years of engineering experience in the following fields: Process, Design, Product, Material, CNC Machining, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Systems, Design, Application, Aerospace, Aeronautics, Automotive, Medical Engineering, Electronics, Tooling Engineer, Development, Research OR; Masters in a STEM field with 6 years of engineering experience in mentioned fields OR; PhD in STEM with 4 year of engineering experience in mentioned fields.
- Experience in Material and Process Engineering.
- Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Clearance.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Special Program Access.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Aerospace composite machining methods
- Experience in Material and Process Engineering in composite material machining
- Active, In scope DoD Secret clearance
- Proficiency with CNC Machining and setup
- Experience with Fanuc and Siemens machine controls
- Ability to write and run CNC code on unique, challenging, and one-off parts
- Proficiency with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
- Statistical analysis methods
