Northrop Grumman Space Systems is searching for an experienced

Principal/Sr Principal Physicist to join the Specialty Engineering team within Launch Vehicles in Chandler, AZ.

The Principal/Sr. Principal Physicist

Essential Functions include a broad range of functions related to Electromagnetic attributes of aerospace systems including requirements definition, requirements management, and requirements verification.  This candidate will be a technical point of contact for assigned projects and perform E3 test execution and support for unit, subsystem, and system level testing.  Will perform Planning, scheduling, support, and execution of  E3 qualification test programs per MIL-STD-464 and MIL-STD-461.  May Interface and work with systems engineers, design engineers, mechanical engineers, suppliers, and Customer program offices to achieve System electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).  May review and define coupon tests of mechanical design aspects to assess for static discharge management, lightning protection, and shielding effectiveness.  Should be familiar with good practices for electrical bonding, grounding, and partitioning.  Should have experience with Lightning effects – both Direct and indirect effects, aircraft zoning, protection schemes, testing.   Will be required to perform creation and execution of qualification test procedures and reports (QTP/QTR).  Should be familiar with RF analysis of systems and antennas (co-site analysis). Link margin analysis and performing pattern testing may be required.   Helpful to have experience with computational electromagnetic (CEM) analysis software tools (CST, FEKO, Savant, EMIT, HFSS, EMA3D). Requires Familiarity and use of  with scripting languages (Python, matlab).  Should be familiar with TEMPEST testing, certification and design.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 5 years of EMC related engineering experience OR,

Master’s Degree in STEM and 3 years of EMC related engineering experience OR, PhD in STEM and 3 years of EMC related engineering experience

  • EMC experience with unit compliance

  • Familiar with EMC standards including MIL-STD-464, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, DO-160, and MIL-HDBK-516 Section 13

  • Familiar with Computational Electromagnetic (CEM) and scripting software tools (CST, FEKO, Savant, EMIT, HFSS, and Python)

  • Clearance:  Eligible for DoD Secret

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics from an accredited university and 5 years of EMC specific engineering experience

  • EMC experience with military aerospace unit, subsystem, and system compliance

  • Experience assessing aircraft mechanical structural design for precipitation static discharge management, grounding, lightning protection, and shielding effectiveness

  • Familiar with carbon composite aerospace structures

  • Proficient working knowledge of EMC standards including MIL-STD-464, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, and DO-160

  • Familiar with system level testing per MIL-STD-464 for HERO, HEMP, External EME, EMC, and precipitation static

  • Proficient working knowledge of CEM, scripting, and data processing software tools (FEKO, CST, Savant, EMIT, HFSS, Python, and matlab)

  • Project lead/management experience

  • iNARTE EMC Certified Engineer

  • Clearance:  Active DoD Secret or Top Secret

  • The ability to obtain program access


Salary Range: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD
Salary Range 2: $112,000 USD - $168,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
