Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division (SSSD) has an opening for a Manager Research Scientist - 2 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Manhattan Beach, CA.

As the Research Laboratories’ Section Manager you will be leading and supporting the Research and Advanced Mission Solutions (RAMS) Center and will be reporting to the Advanced Mission Solutions Department manager.

In this role, the select candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide leadership and direction to staff research scientists to execute basic and applied research tasks

  • Manage employee performance (including engagement strategies for both higher and lower performers)

  • Act as the first point of contact for technical issues and make decisions to ensure the quality and schedule of programs

  • Participate in recruiting, hiring, and day to day support for research team

  • Provide inputs and make decisions on capital budget

  • Develop and implement new technologies in a rapid prototype development laboratory environment supporting various space, aircraft, and missile systems

  • Create and leverage strategic collaborations with partner organizations such as universities, consortia, industrial suppliers, and national labs

  • Collaborate with peers on major research thrusts and multidisciplinary projects, with the flexibility to take on diverse roles such as contributor, consulting expert, and principal investigator

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree plus 5 years of experience in Materials Science, Chemistry, Applied Physics, or closely related field from an accredited university

  • Experience with foundational research and development

  • Experience leading or managing a team

  • Ability to obtain DoD Top Secret or SCI clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D plus 4 years of experience in Materials Science, Chemistry, Applied Physics, or closely related field from an accredited university

  • Experience as a research principal investigator in topics such as: nanotechnology for aerospace, multifunctional thin films/coatings, optics & photonics, or semiconductor materials & devices.

  • Experience as an R&D program manager and/or R&D proposal lead

  • Active in-scope DoD Top Secret or SCI clearance


Salary Range: $147,800 USD - $221,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
