Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) Advanced Capabilities division is leading the development of the next generation of high-performance computing. Superconducting electronics forms the core of our technology, with a focus on energy-efficient computation using our patented superconducting digital logic technology, Reciprocal Quantum Logic (RQL). On a gate-for-gate basis, RQL consumes orders of magnitude less power than CMOS while running at significantly higher clock speeds.

We are looking for you to join our team as a Principal Quantum Physicist or Sr. Principal Quantum Physicist based out of McClellan, CA in the Sacramento area.

We are seeking a motivated Quantum Physicist to help us design the next generation of high-performance computing solutions! Our technology is built around superconducting electronics and energy efficient computation. You will work with a team of scientists and engineers to design, fabricate, and test digital logic circuits. As a member of our team you will:

  • Work closely with design and fabrication to build and test novel quantum circuits and interfaces with CMOS
  • Test custom quantum circuits and integrated CMOS interface circuits
  • Implement best practices for test results and concurrent simulations to iterate within the design process

This position can be filled as either a Principal Quantum Physicist or a Sr. Principal Quantum Physicist

Basic Qualifications for Principal Quantum Physicist:

  • PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, or a related field (or will complete by December 2023); Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience; OR a Bachelor's Degree with 5 plus years of relevant experience.
  • Experience designing and executing experiments in physics or electronic device research.
  • The ability to demonstrate strong communication skills and to work on a diverse multi-disciplinary team
  • A strong ability to learn new topics quickly and independently solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)

Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Quantum Physicist:

  • PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, or a related field and 4 plus years' experience; Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant experience; Bachelor's Degree and 9 plus years' experience.
  • Experience designing and executing experiments in physics or electronic device research.
  • The ability to demonstrate strong communication skills and to work on a diverse multi-disciplinary team
  • A strong ability to learn new topics quickly and independently solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)

Preferred qualifications

  • A PhD in Experimental Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Deep expertise of cryogenic experimental methods
  • Ability to automate experimental tasks using high level and built-in software languages
  • Experience with integrating theory, design, and testing methodology to improve the product development cycle within an agile framework
  • An active TS/SCI clearance with a Polygraph

This position reports to McClellan, CA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Sacramento, CA, CA, USA.


Salary Range: $126,600 USD - $190,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $157,000 USD - $235,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
