Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems – Propulsions Division is looking for a Staff Research Scientist to join our team at our Promontory, UT facility

Position Summary:

R&D scientist needed to support development, scale-up, manufacture and test activities of pyrotechnics and explosives at Promontory facilities. This individual will be expected to interface with management and customers on proposals, program status and technical accomplishments.

Preferred Requirements:

Specialized skills may be considered in lieu of experience. Energetic expertise in the following is a plus

  • energetic formulation, characterization and scaleup protocol

  • thermochemical and combustion analysis

  • melt-pour, pressure casting, granulation and pressing processes

  • polymer chemistry and decomposition reaction mechanisms

  • manufacturing process control and methodologies

  • energetic facility and process design

  • energetic material waste disposal and storage

  • ability to write and publish scientific papers

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Understanding of analytical chemical testing

  • Understanding of explosive modeling and testing

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.

  • Detail oriented but able to understand the big picture.

Education/Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry (Physical-Organic) or Chemical Engineering with 9 yrs of experience is highly preferred

  • Significant experience working with energetics may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree (12 years with MS or 14 years with BS)

  • Candidate must be able to obtain secret clearance

  • Must have US citizenship


Salary Range: $134,700 USD - $202,100 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
