We are seeking an individual with the skills of a computational scientist, applied mathematician, numerical physicist, or software engineer looking for the opportunity to make significant and ongoing contributions to a high-performance computing (HPC) center. The ideal candidate has significant experience in the numerical simulation of physical phenomena, knowledge of state-of-the art methods employed in scientific computation, and the ability to design, develop, test, and deploy software on HPC systems. Strong candidates are willing to learn about emerging technologies and can effectively communicate their own knowledge to others. The candidate is expected to perform as a leader in the development and application of algorithms, data structures, codes, and analytical tools to advance high-performance computational capabilities across multiple areas of physical study.

This position will serve on-site in Linthicum/ Annapolis Junction, MD.

Your responsibilities:

  • Develop and/or implement algorithms, data structures, routines, and codes in C/C++, Fortran, and/or Python to advance the computational capabilities of users of HPC systems.
  • Collaborate with numerical simulation team members on code development, testing and validation of simulation tools, and analysis of mathematical or numerical models.
  • Support HPC system users in identifying, understanding, and resolving limitations in their computational workflows.
  • Frequently communicate with technical staff and organizational leadership to determine development requirements and report on progress.
  • Document methods and results in technical papers and presentations.

  • Motivation to learn new technologies and technical skills necessary to advance them.
  • Ability to collaborate in a small group setting as well as work independently.
  • Interdisciplinary communication skills.

Basic Qualifications for a Sr. Staff Computational Scientist:

  • Ph.D. degree in scientific computation, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, physics, or a related field and 15 plus years.
  • Experience using HPC systems to answer questions about physical phenomena.
  • Knowledge of algorithms, methods, software libraries, and other tools commonly used in scientific computation.
  • Proficiency writing code in C/C++ or Fortran; experience writing code in Python.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with peers in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with CI/FS poly clearance per business requirements. US Citizenship is a prerequisite.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing mathematical models or validating models against experimental data.
  • Experience writing MPI-based parallel codes and/or scientific codes that make use of general-purpose GPUs.
  • Experience using version control software and familiarity with version control best practices.
  • Experience administering HPC systems used for scientific applications.
  • Knowledge of superconducting physics, quantum mechanics, or condensed matter physics.
  • Active TS/SCI with CI/FS poly security clearance.

    This position reports to Linthicum, MD, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Annapolis Junction, MD, MD, USA.


    Salary Range: $206,600 USD - $309,800 USD

    Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
