Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems - Propulsion Division is recruiting for a Metallurgist/Principal Metallurgist to join our Research & Development Metals and Thermal team in our Promontory, UT offices.   

Role description & Responsibilities:

The Metallurgist is responsible for providing technical expertise and consultation on all metallurgical issues, including alloy selection, processing, supply chain support, failure investigation, tooling processing, and production/facilities support.  You will also be expected to perform hands-on metallurgical analysis on a variety of parts and hardware using our lab instruments.  Because of this, experience using a variety of lab instruments (SEM, optical microscopes, etc.) is expected.   

Job Duties:   

  • Leading or supporting failure investigations

  • Metallurgical design support and evaluation of flight hardware and production parts

  • Material selection and characterization

  • Review of material and production specifications

  • Review of design certifications

  • Assist in developing tooling concepts and selection of materials for tooling   

  • Presentation of data and recommendations to internal and external customers

  • Support a variety of organizations and programs as metallurgical expert

Experience Requirements: 

A qualified candidate for this position should have some experience relevant to this position, including:

  • Experience with failure analysis, corrosion engineering, metallography, and microstructures

  • Previous experience using standard metallurgical lab instruments (SEM, optical microscopes, hardness testers, etc.)

  • Candidate must be able to obtain a clearance

Experience Preferred: 

·Familiarity in fabrication, welding, and heat treatment of forged stock and castings  

  • Experience with aerospace metallic materials and processing specifications  

  • Ability to work well with a multi-disciplinary team

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Broad understanding of metals and processing methods, physical metallurgy, and material structure/property relationships  

  • Experience with laboratory procedures and knowledge of safety requirements

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

Education/Certifications

  • BS in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, or Material Science (with 2 years metallurgical experience)

  • Position can be filled one level higher, 5 years with BS, 3 years with MS or 0 years with Ph.D.

  • Advanced degree preferred


Salary Range: $73,400 USD - $110,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
