Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems - Propulsion Division is looking for a Principal/ Sr Principal Polymer Scientist to join our Research & Development team in our Promontory, UT offices.   

Role description & Responsibilities:

The Research Scientist is responsible for executing strong research and problem solving capability in an R&D and production support organization.  This individual will provide technical expertise and consultation on a variety of material issues, including material selection, supply chain support, failure investigation, material formulation, and production/facilities support.  This position is focused but not limited to supporting research and development of polymers, resins, and/or adhesives for usage in rocket motors.

Job Duties:   

  • Leading or supporting failure investigations

  • Production support and material testing for a variety of programs at PS and other NG locations 

  • Design of subscale components, test specimens, and fixtures

  • Write instructions/planning for execution of fabrication, assembly, and testing

  • Material selection and characterization

  • Review of material and production specifications  

  • Presentation of data and recommendations to internal and external customers

  • Coordinate and schedule work through multiple organizations

  • Formulation of new materials   

Experience Requirements: 

  • A qualified candidate for this position should have experience relevant to this position, including:

  • Demonstrated ability with a variety of polymers  

  • Candidate must be able to obtain a clearance

Experience Preferred: 

  • Knowledge of polymer mixing, polymer fabrication, and polymer formulation

  • Significant Chemistry and Chemical analysis knowledge

  • Experience with aerospace materials and processing specifications  

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience with laboratory procedures and knowledge of safety requirements

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

Education/Certifications:

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or other related field required and 5 Years with BS; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD

  • Position can be filled one level higher, 9 Years with BS; 7 Years with Masters; 4 Years with PhD


Salary Range: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD
Salary Range 2: $112,000 USD - $168,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
