Northrop Grumman Defense Systems sector (NGDS) is seeking a Principal Military Trainer - JEST Lead to join our growing team of diverse professionals in Suffolk, Virginia. The Joint Exercise Support Team (JEST) Lead will provide direct support to the Joint Staff (JS) J7 event planning teams as required in their mission of planning and assisting in the execution of Joint Combatant Commands (COCOM) exercises.  The candidate will be the lead of one of the various COCOM JEST Teams as required in preparatory and support activities throughout the Joint Event Life Cycle (JELC) to include planning conferences, academic seminars, event execution, and post event analysis.  JEST Leads directly interact with active military officers (O-5 through O-7), government civilians (GS 13 through GS 15) and numerous stakeholders within the JS J7 and supported COCOM.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acts as the Joint Event Support Team Lead (JEST Lead) to provide planning, management, liaison and coordination for assigned exercises/events, the joint training system, and special projects
  • Serves as the alternate point of contact to the JS J7 Joint Exercise Division Desk Officer and/or Event Planner for contractor support to assigned exercises/events
  • Builds exercise planning schedules; forecasts labor and travel; assists development of exercise/event budgets; and facilitates as well as monitors Joint Event Life Cycle (JELC) progress
  • Develops and maintains the team calendar; coordinates team member assignments; deployment; and assists functional area planners as required
  • You will become intimately familiar with the supported organization, JELC processes, and contract deliverables in order to successfully design, plan, prepare, execute and assess supported exercises/events
  • This position includes travel to locations within the supported organization’s area of responsibility

Basic Qualifications:

  • One of the following:
    • High school diploma or GED with a minimum of 10 years of professional leadership experience
    • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 6 years of professional leadership experience
    • Master’s degree with a minimum of 4 years of professional leadership experience
  • Service and joint doctrine experience to include combat, combat support, and combat service support operations
  • Experience with exercises at levels comparable to Joint Task Force, Army Corps, Numbered Air Forces, and Numbered Fleet; specifically the planning, design, and execution and assessment of exercises
  • Familiarity with the Joint Exercise Life Cycle
  • The ability to: prepare and conduct seminars/work groups; conduct training in large and small groups; conduct post exercise analysis
  • Ability to travel to both CONUS and OCONUS locations in support of the task order (up to 25% of the time)
  • Active U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Top Secret security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI)
  • Current U.S. Passport or ability to obtain a Passport
  • Ability to work on-site in Suffolk, Virginia

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College or Service/agency equivalent
  • Combatant Command or JS J7 Staff experience
  • Knowledge of scenarios/MSELs for joint training events
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills
  • Experience working with and around senior military and government personnel


Salary Range: $71,400 USD - $107,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
