A New Reality: Virtual Internship Exceeds Expectations

Meet Turner: A senior at the University of Texas at Dallas who recently completed an internship with Northrop Grumman. See how his internship exceeded expectations.

This summer I had the opportunity to intern within Northrop Grumman’s Global Supply Chain team. I applied to Northrop Grumman right as many companies were closing their doors in fear of the pandemic. Northrop Grumman’s kindness and willingness to support an intern presence over the summer defined my experience with the company!

Within my first week I was tasked with training to become a Buyer for IT Hardware and Software on the Global Procurement Services (GPS) team. I had a network of mentor’s that were always open to questions and offered one-on-one training sessions. There was no hiding behind the virtual wall that remote work offers, and instead it was a very hands-on experience, and I was expected to contribute to the team of buyers that made up GPS. Throughout the training process I shadowed veteran buyers, took many pages of notes, and the feeling of signing and finalizing that first order was incredible. By the end of my 10-week internship, I signed over 40 purchase orders worth over $800,000.

While actively training as a buyer I was assigned to participate in scheduling and sourcing projects. Our team developed a new integrated tool to further organize orders, enterprise agreements, and trade studies with thousands of line items of data. The project helped to increase management oversight and decreased purchase order renewal errors. I also participated in analyzing and validating supplier pricing data for sourcing agents to guarantee competitive pricing on future orders.

My virtual experience with Northrop Grumman was more than I could have asked for from my first internship. The team welcomed all interns and helped enable all of us to contribute as active members of the team.
