Veteran Spotlight: Meet U.S. Navy Veteran Douglas

Growing up with a father who was a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, Douglas took on a career in the Navy as a Special Warfare Combatant Crewman (SWCC). After serving in the Navy, Douglas was recruited via LinkedIn to Northrop Grumman two years ago and is currently a Senior Principal Project Manager.

Since 2018, employees who newly self-identify as a military Veteran receive a commemorative Northrop Grumman military challenge coin in recognition of their dedication to our company, our mission and, most importantly, our country. To date, over 22,000 coins have been distributed to our military Veteran employee population.

What was your experience when you received the Northrop Grumman military challenge coin and why is this token of gratitude important to you and our Veteran community?

Receiving the military challenge coin is a recognition of our unconditional service given and yet to be completed. It represents to me what is yet to come. I am still “writing” my legacy, even now within the civilian realm.

What is the significance of the coin you received while serving in the military and now here at Northrop Grumman?

The military culture is not only rich in history, but also in rites of passage. This means coins are now, and in the past, used as a token, usually given as a result of a significant event in which a team or an individual participated. Some Veterans display their earned coins for discussion purposes, to motivate others, or to commemorate major milestones.
