Veteran Spotlight: U.S. Marine Corps Veteran John on How the Military Prepared Him for His New Role

After graduating from Columbia College, John served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served four years in active duty and another four years in the inactive reserves. In July of 2015, he left active duty and transitioned to the corporate world, putting his bachelor’s degree in Administration and a certificate in Management to use. He shares why he chose Northrop Grumman and how his service prepared him for his new role.

What is your military background, and what made you consider joining Northrop Grumman?

I served in the Marine Corps with 3rd Battalion 5th Marines in the infantry as a mortarmen. I heard about the company from my cousin, who told me how great the company was. After that, I started doing my research and fell in love with everything about Northrop Grumman.

What is your job at Northrop Grumman and how did your military background set you up for this role?

I’m an Associate Talent Acquisition Business Partner at Northrop Grumman. My military background set me up for the role I am in now by teaching me how to work in a high stress environment without losing focus. The Marines also provided me the skills to multitask and work with a team.

What was your experience transitioning into Northrop Grumman as a veteran?

My transition into Northrop Grumman as a veteran was smooth. Everyone I worked with – from my recruiter, Adam, to my onboarder, Jackie – was very helpful. Both were always quick to answer any question that I had.

What do you hope to gain from your new role?

I hope to gain a new skill set from my current role that I can use to advance my career. I also hope to gain a better understanding of the business.

What advice would you give to other veterans interested in a career in Northrop Grumman?

I would tell them to take the leap into a new adventure! Northrop Grumman will make you feel part of the family.
