How did you find yourself at Northrop Grumman?
I interviewed and was offered a position during the 2019 National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Conference in Detroit. At the time, I had a number of other full time job offers from other aerospace and defense companies, but I decided to join Northrop Grumman based off of conversations I had with employees and the recruiters during the conference.
What do you do at Northrop Grumman?
I am a software engineer in the Pathways Program, which means that I get to move to a different site and/or role every year, for three years. This is a great opportunity, which allows me to experience a number of opportunities early on to find the best fit for me. Currently, I do some embedded work and programming chips for use on a variety of machines. Sometimes I am fabricating new code, fixing old code, or just reviewing code. The current sprint defines my tasks.
Has there been a defining moment in your time here?
A defining moment that I have experienced at Northrop Grumman is my increased and enhanced exposure to being in an agile environment as a programmer. It really pushes you to make as many errors as possible, which enables you to quickly correct those errors. It is so challenging to make progress in any task whenever you come to a point where you do not know what is unknown. When I started working with the software team, I did not know how to program compiler flags, different masks, and more. Being thrown into “the pit,” as a beginner has taught me that I should be much more humble, but my team is around to support and teach me.
