High-Performance Short and Medium Range Ballistic Missile Target Vehicles

High-Performance Short and Medium Range Ballistic Missile Target Vehicles
Type 4 (T4) targets include threat-representative Short Range Ballistic Missiles (SRBM) and Medium Range Ballistic Missiles (MRBM) manufactured and programmed to simulate incoming enemy missiles, offering an affordable and reliable means to test advanced missile defense systems and improve existing systems. Northrop Grumman is the end-to-end provider of T4 targets, including propulsion systems, avionics and its advanced, configurable re-entry system.
A first-of-its-kind target, T4 offers exceptional mission flexibility for a variety of missile defense tests. T4 consists of two baseline vehicle designs and 10 mission selectable vehicle enhancement kits that represent varying sophisticated capabilities designed to challenge U.S. missile defense systems. T4 delivers a large performance range, providing the opportunity to meet a variety of mission requirements with one adaptable target vehicle.
Drawing from decades of experience in solid rocket propulsion, Northrop Grumman prioritizes cost-effectiveness by leveraging legacy commercial solid rocket motors to drive down costs and boost reliability. T4 SRBMs feature a CASTOR® IVB motor as a first stage, and the T4 MRBM expands on the SRBM platform by adding an Orion 38 solid rocket motor as a second stage, providing increased performance for longer range missions.
