Next Gen OPIR Polar (NGP)
When a mission is as critical as missile warning and defense, experience and data-driven solutions are essential to high confidence mission performance.

Next Gen OPIR Polar is designed to keep pace as the threat evolves
Northrop Grumman’s Next Gen OPIR Polar program is a critical advancement in the nation’s missile warning capabilities, focusing on the northern polar region — the most direct and challenging pathway for missile threats to the United States. Operating in highly elliptical orbits, these next-generation satellites will provide comprehensive coverage of the entire Northern Hemisphere with modernized sensors designed to detect faint heat signatures from evolving ballistic and hypersonic threats.
Equipped with enhanced resiliency and advanced communication systems, Next Gen OPIR Polar will ensure rapid transmission of wide-band infrared data to ground stations, enabling faster, more accurate missile detection and tracking to stay in the fight in contested scenarios.
This program will strengthen national defense by delivering reliable, adaptable technology that meets the demands of today’s complex threat environment, reinforcing the U.S. strategic missile warning mission now and into the future.
