What You’ll get to Do:
Northrop Grumman Corporation, Navigation and Cockpit Systems, located in Woodland Hills, CA, is looking for a highly motivated System Safety Engineer to join our Specialty Engineering team. This position requires an individual with a positive attitude, excellent design and communication skills, demonstrated leadership, entrepreneurial mindset, and the ability to work well in a team environment.
The Systems Safety Engineer we are seeking will be an individual who thrives in a diverse work environment, has outstanding communication skills and possesses a strong sense of engagement and continuous process improvement. A fundamental knowledge of Reliability Engineering principles and System Safety Program conduct in accordance with MIL-HDBK-217 and MIL-STD-882 is preferred. Fundamental knowledge of principles of reliability and safety engineering including the capability to perform: Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Reliability Predictions, Built In Test (BIT) Analysis, Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Safety Analysis Report (SAR) and fundamental knowledge of statistics are preferred.
Primary tasks will include supporting development and qualification of Navigation and Cockpit systems by independently analyzing and recommending safety criteria in system design, equipment and procedures to control or eliminate hazards. Will perform hazard analyses for systems and sub-systems, software system safety assessments, and hazardous material management planning and execution. Develops safety documents as required to support customer and test/operational range requirements. Develop Reliability predictions, FMECAs, and execute BIT DVT test plans and reports.

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Systems Safety Engineer are:
- Bachelor's Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and 5 years of experience, or Master’s Degree with 3 years of experience, or Ph.D and 0 years of experience
- Experience in Systems, Electrical Engineering, or Hardware/Software System Safety.
- Experience in Development environments applying MIL-STD-882 System Safety program execution.
- System safety analytical experience assessing systems/subsystems, identifying safety hazards, and recommending safety requirements to system design and operations to mitigate safety risks.
- Experience developing safety documents as required in support of customer requirements.
- Fundamental knowledge of principles of system safety engineering including the capability to develop: Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), System Safety Program Plans (SSPP), Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), System/Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), and Software System Safety Analysis.
- Knowledge of engineering drawings and ability to read schematics and parts lists.
- Proficient in the use of MS Office applications (example, Excel and PowerPoint)
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
- US Citizenship
- Active DoD Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:
- A fundamental knowledge of Reliability Engineering principles in accordance with MIL-HDBK-217 would be considered an additional plus.
- Fundamental knowledge of principles of reliability including the capability to perform: Reliability Predictions, Built In Test (BIT) Analysis, and Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
- Capable of understanding incident investigations and root cause and corrective actions
- Develop reliability predictions using Relex, PTC Windchill and/or approved prediction methodologies for mechanical, electrical and optical designs
- Experience with Inertial Navigation systems
