Meet Ayisha
Graduate Software Engineer at Northrop Grumman UK

Empowering Early Career Engineers
Places on Northrop Grumman’s Graduate programme are filled by returning Industrial Placement Students like Ayisha.
After her 12-month placement, Ayisha went on to graduate from university before rejoining the business as a Graduate Software Engineer to continue honing her technical and leadership skills.
A Foundation Built on Curiosity and Learning
Ayisha began her journey in software development while studying computer science at Cardiff University. During her year of industrial placement at Northrop Grumman in 2022, she gained first-hand experience and a deeper understanding of what it means to have a career in software. “I focused on strengthening my Python skills and learned about AWS while working on a project, completing the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and Professional Scrum Master certifications to broaden my skills,” she explained.
A standout moment during her internship was collaborating with fellow placement students on a project for Cheltenham Science Festival. “We presented our project and had the opportunity to inspire young people by introducing them to STEM fields,” Ayisha said. This engagement not only allowed her to apply her skills but also reinforced her desire to contribute meaningfully to the future of the technology industry.
After graduating with a first-class degree, Ayisha returned to Northrop Grumman as part of the graduate programme. “The programme started with a group project that enhanced our technical skills before moving onto customer work,” she said. During these first few months, Ayisha enjoyed developing her skills and knowledge of TypeScript, Cypress, Jest, React and JavaScript.
Continuous Growth and Support
Throughout her time at NG, Ayisha has benefited from a supportive network that includes a mentor and a buddy. “My team has been incredibly welcoming, guiding me through challenges and encouraging my growth,” she explained. Her involvement in soft skill sessions has also been invaluable, offering insights into communication and teamwork that are applicable both professionally and personally.
As a placement student, Ayisha learned the importance of mentoring, and she now volunteers as a buddy to new students and graduates. “I hope to provide them with the same support and guidance I received when I first joined,” she said.
Looking ahead, Ayisha shared her advice for anyone looking to join Northrop Grumman. “Prepare well for your interview because it can set you apart,” she advised. “For those starting their careers at NG, don’t hesitate to ask questions; it shows your initiative and desire to learn.”
As she continues to expand her skills and make meaningful contributions, Ayisha represents the next generation of engineers committed to innovation and excellence in Defence.
